DC United and Loudoun win, Power and Spirit draw, and more: Labor Day Freedom Kicks
Happy Labor Day, everyone! Hopefully all of you have the day off today, our last major holiday of the summer. There was a ton of soccer, so let’s discuss some of it before I go enjoy the day:
For the first time since May 31st, DC United have won a match! Gabriel Pirani’s brace was the difference in their win on the road to NYCFC.
Takeaway’s from Loudoun’s 3-1 win over Miami
Loudoun United get the win against Miami FC and are starting to build a streak here.
DC Power overcome late first half mistakes to draw Spokane Zephyr in home opener
DC Power draw in an entertaining home opener.
The Washington Spirit also draw at home against the Chicago Stars. Sofia Cantore got the goal for the Spirit, but a costly mistake gave Chicago the equalizer.
CHAMPIONS: Seattle Sounders win Leagues Cup 2025 over Inter Miami (MLS)
Seattle trounces Inter Miami to win Leagues Cup, and after the match Inter Miami decides they’re gonna fight about it. Luis Suarez spits on the head of Seattle security and he should be suspended for a long time.
Liverpool agree £125m Isak deal with Newcastle (BBC)
Alexander Isak is on his way to Liverpool in a record transfer fee for the Premier League. His saga with Newcastle is over and he can get back to playing soccer.
Chelsea reportedly after USWNT, Angel City star Alyssa Thompson (PSW)
Alyssa Thompson could be headed to Chelsea, and that speculation only built after she was not in the roster for Angel City’s match due to an excused absence.
USMNT coach Pochettino has very normal college football Saturday at Ohio State (PSW)
I need every coach to hear me on this: never, ever ever ever, ever ever EVER, do this again.
Decrepit RFK Stadium had to come down. It still kind of stings. (WaPo)
As Boyz II Men (and others) once sang so beautifully, it’s so hard to say goodbye to yesterday. But soon, we’ll have to say farewell to the stadium we all love.

Not only did Suarez spit on someone, he also put someone in a headlock. Busquets also punched someone. Hopefully this is the beginning of the downfall of that team.
Bunch of sad sacks. I’m sure they’ve already complained of about the horrible, no good nasty treatment they got on their way to losing so badly.
It’s almost as if pampering and favoring one team full of big egos whilst making them your number one media focus at the expense of all other teams has consequences.
Truly sad display by Inter Miami. I hope there are fines and suspensions for the players involved.
I think the tournament and the league are in a tough spot now, especially after the Mascherano “Passover” of consequences. They should come down hard now, it’s just that Suarez is enough of a media lightning rod that they can’t get past it without damaging Miami. Maybe if they had disciplined Mascherano, there would be more precedent for it. Whatever they do now, it will certainly be visible.
MLS has awarded Miami $1,000,000 in TAM and have forced an apology from Seattle for being mean.
It would be wise of FOX to ditch Alexi Lalas from coverage before the soccer fans tuning into the USMNT for the first time around the World Cup discover him. He’s a fucking blight and a turnoff.
The Miami players’ behavior after a loss is not good, and it is not the first time. Whether it’s their storied careers, the league bending roster rules, or refs giving them too much slack, that team has shown a consistent disdain for MLS, US Soccer, CONCACAF, and opposing teams.
They have lashed out when they don’t win. Which has happened in every tournament except the 2023 Leagues Cup. True, they won the shield last year and set a points record, but in tournaments they have not fared well given their roster spending.
I have to say that Messi, while certainly prone to whining to the refs, is not one to go completely unhinged. But some of his teammates…oh, boy.
