Washington Spirit sign prolific Tanzanian-born striker, Clara Luvanga
The Washington Spirit have made a resounding statement to close out the secondary transfer window, agreeing to sign the reigning Saudi Women’s Premier League (SWPL) golden boot winner, Clara Luvanga, from Al Nassr. Luvanga has been signed to a four-year contract through the 2029 season, with the Spirit paying a so far undisclosed transfer fee to Al Nassr to complete the deal.
Luvanga is just 21-years-old and has been tearing up the Saudi Women’s Premier League for the past three seasons. According to Fotmob she scored 33 goals and delivered seven assists in 23 matches across all competitions, 26 goals and 11 assists in 24 matches in 2024/25, and in her debut season with Al Nassr in 2023/24 she scored 11 goals and dished eight assists in 14 matches. Luvanga has played three games for Al Nassr this current season and has nine goals.
Assessing player performances across leagues is hard, and translating them to the NWSL is even harder. The SWPL isn’t one of the top leagues in the world, but its big clubs feature plenty of well-known talents. Former NWSL player and Portugal international Jéssica Silva plays at Al Hilal along with longtime PSG midfielder Kheira Hamraoui, and Orlando Pride attacker Adriana was recently joined at Al Qadsiah by ex-Gotham goalscorer Esther González. Furthermore, counting stats such as goals and assists can be hard to quantify without context. Number of games played can help, but a lot is still missing.
However…

Chat is this good? Cause it seems good.
This is simply outrageous output. Averaging 1.71 goals and over nine shots per 90 is absurd behavior. I cannot stress enough how much Luvanga had become a case of a player outgrowing a league, and, again, at just 21-years-old. The NWSL will be a much stiffer challenge, and there have been a few games when the Spirit haven’t put up nine shots as a team. But a developing talent like Luvanga has the ability to change that, potentially drastically.
While this will be a step up in competition that she will have to adapt and adjust to, Luvanga has all the tools to succeed in this league. If she does, Spirit fans and the rest of the league could be introduced to her personality. One of the funniest posts on her Instagram account is a picture of her pointing to a scoreboard displaying a zero below rival club Al Hilal, and a 9 below a cutout of her face, touting the fact that she had scored nine goals in all combined games against them.
This is extremely my kinda carrying on. Welcome to the Washington Spirit, Clara, let’s do some goals.
Ignore the music, just watch:

The Spirit have a logjam of talent on the frontline–Monday, Kouassi, Cantore, Hatch, Rodman, Hatch, Martinez, and now Luvanga. You figure that some of them are going to be moved on at some point–just not enough minutes for that many players in so few positions.
Despite the names, it cannot be overstated how badly we needed a high performing finisher at this point in the season
Cantore is great for bangers, but does not finish at a high enough clip, and is finding her false nine role a real grind. She’s stuck to it admirably, but she is so clearly wiped after 60 or so minutes of it
Monday, she’s simply not been the same this season. Hard to say why, but there’s a sluggishness and lack of sharpness that is concerning, and it’s been there since the starting gun this year. She’s probably the most likely to be moved on.
Hatch has such value, but hasn’t gotten the finishing gyroscope quite calibrated after the maternity return, and is probably lucky her ankle roll wasn’t more serious.
Bethi and Cantore would be better used as 10s down the stretch, as soon as Luvanda can go from the start, she’ll have every reason to be able to start
I wouldn’t disagree with your comments except to add: if Cantore and Bethi are going to play #10 roles, what does that mean for Santos?
Leicy is a very unique 8
Very good at buildup and can ping the ball, but touch and close control of a 10 is not there, and her top speed isn’t her strength, so she needs others to drive forward with it
I’m very curious what the option to play her with Bethi looks like with Hal in support
I’m so excited!
