DC Power FC has a major test this afternoon when they travel to Kentucky to take on the defending champions Lexington SC. DC Power is coming off a road win over Brooklyn FC last weekend and hope to keep the good play going.

This has been a lopsided series between the two teams. After DC Power won the first meeting in October 2024, Lexington has a six game unbeaten streak, with three wins and 3 draws and scoring 12 goals with a +6 goal differential. DC hopes that the good, aggressive play they displayed against Brooklyn can fit on the plane to Lexington.

“It’s going to be a challenge,” head coach Omid Namazi said during media availability this week. “I won’t sugarcoat it, but I feel we still have the tools to be able to compete with Lexington and get out with three points. We just have to be at our best.”

Lexington SC, who won the Gainbridge Super League last season, got off to a great start in the sprint season with a 3-0 win against Brooklyn FC two weeks ago. In that match, Addie McCain became the first player in league history to record 20 regular season goals. They have always had some great players, but the continuity is what has helped them develop into a championship team. Still, with the deep roster that DC Power has developed, Namazi feels it’s only a matter of time before they’re able to become an elite team.

“I feel like we’re such a deeper roster. When you think about Gianna [Gourley], Alyssa [Walker], even Sue [Fitch] being sick and not being able to play [last week], those are three players that started last week last year for us,” Namazi said. “Anna Bagley started a bunch of games for us last year. She was on the bench [against Brooklyn]. So we’re much deeper and the quality across the roster is higher. So we’re in a much better place than we were last year. I just feel like we haven’t gelled as a team yet because of the high turnover. When that happens, I feel like we’re gonna, we’re gonna put a string of wins together.”

“I’m hoping that it starts this weekend. And I don’t fear Lexington at all. Last year we had him two, one down in, in their, at their place. We gave up a leg goal to, to tie it up to two, but I feel like we can beat anybody.”

DC Power can use this match as an early measuring stick to see how that roster development has come along. They will have just about everyone available for selection except for Sarah McCoy, who’s “a week or two away” from being available. Gianna Gourley, who missed the opener with a quad injury but returned to the field in a substitute role last weekend, has the most goals of anyone in the DC-Lexington series with four, and getting her involved will be key to DC’s chances this afternoon.
