DC United vs. New England Revolution: Preview, time, and how to watch
DC United is back on the field tonight in the friendly confines of Audi Field to take on the New England Revolution. The Black-and-Red hope to continue their unbeaten streak but would love to add one to the win column after a couple of draws in league play.
DC United is coming off a 1-1 draw in Montreal where they had to claw back from a deficit once again to earn the point. Against the Revs, who are fourth in the East, defense will be vital, especially in the midfield where Carles Gil can be incredibly dangerous. Gil has 7 goals and 3 assists on the season and has been a guy who creates a lot for their attack. He traditionally presents a big challenge for United, and tonight will be no exception.
For the Black-and-Red, they will need to get back to their ways of creating lots of scoring chances so they have the opportunities to put a few on the board. Tai Baribo has been the energy on offense with 12 goals on the season, but they need to figure out a way to get Louis Munteanu more involved as well. The midfield will need to play a terrific match to counter New England and find the space to create scoring opportunities. If they can do that, they can get the win and climb in the Eastern Conference standings.

Hopefully Hefti avoids picking up a yellow tonight. If he picks one up he’ll be suspended for the game in Charlotte on Saturday due to yellow card accumulation. He’s the only player on the disciplinary report for DCU.

Yes, this looks like the best possible lineup for DCU, at this time.

2-0 at the half. DC has looked good aside from the goals, hopefully they can puke it back
Rubbish. John Hart said the same thing at halftime. Just that they got beat by letting guys get behind the defense, which can’t happen.
The Revs were bossing the game
Two of the easiest goals Revs will ever score. Weiler’s tactics have worked most the year. Not always fun to watch, but his coaching is a large part of the reason this team has gone from wooden spoon to roughly mid-table. That said, the deference and overly conservative approach at home is backfiring miserably tonight. Absolutely overrun in the midfield. To make the playoffs, I think DC need to find a way to show a different look at home and make Audi more of a fortress.

Even the Spirit can’t turn (Rowdy) Audi into a fortress. Doesn’t seem like it ever has been one, tbh, not like RFK was back in the day, even when the atmosphere should be intimidating.
Is Weiler the only coach we’ve had who pretty much leaves his subs on the field to warm up for all of halftime? It’s not a big thing, but it strikes me as odd. I’d think you’d want them around for whatever team talk/tactics discussion you’re having in the locker room.
This is the DC area, so that makes too much sense.

Struggling with some of this MLS commentary. Matt Turner has a nice save, sure, but DC have only mustered one shot on goal. By stellar goalkeeping, they must mean Sean Johnson, with at least five solid saves.
Kijima came over from STL not San Diego…unless San Diego took him in the expansion draft and then we traded for him…?

Down 3-0 in the 83rd, and it took all 11 DCU players on the field 30 seconds to notice that none of them were taking the corner kick. I’m feeling a lack of urgency on this second half

Nice to see Weiler try out a tactical wrinkle, as he did at the start of the second half. Sad to see him try something that defies normal nomenclature (asymmetric 4-3-3?) and have it backfire so badly. The team was much more disjointed after the change, and the reversion to 4-4-2 after the Revs’ third was too little too late. Plus as megs noted the energy level was inadequate and fading. But what I found most distressing/disturbing was the complete abandonment of any attempt to contain, track, or indeed at times even identify Carles Gil; which is an unconscionable fail when facing NE.
Also the failure to track the guy who scored the hat trick on all 3 of his goals.
DC were totally overrun in midfield in the first half. I hoped it would get better with Servania, but it did not. Hopkins was a turnover machine during the first half, but Ordaz had some real struggles too.
The first goal happened because Nono pulled up just outside the box instead of helping to defend. Left defense overmatched, with nobody covering the wide attacker. They just need to do better.
But our passing sucked. And receiving passes wasn’t much better. Except for maybe Louis, everybody’s first touch looked as if they’ve been practicing in 95° heat all week with concrete shoes on.
Lethargic and unskilled. Totally outclassed.
