Seattle Reign FC vs. Washington Spirit: Preview, time, and how to watch
Washington Spirit are on the road tonight, hoping to extend their winning streak to five matches against Seattle Reign.
The Spirit (4-3-1) are at the first stop on a long road trip, which will also take them to San Diego and Pachuca, Mexico over the next couple weeks. They’ll be coming into this game more well-rested than their last run of three matches in just over a week. With a week off before this game, coach Adrián González said his team focused on recovery and will benefit from having a high number of players healthy and available to play tonight.
Seattle Reign (3-2-2) started this season strong but haven’t scored a goal in their last three matches. González described them as being particularly dangerous when playing vertically, “finding forwards to play underneath and from there, you know attacking height with wingers, with, again, number tens.” Andi Sullivan also had a positive analysis of her opponents.
“Seattle’s just always organized, always comes with a solid game plan, and they have this, like, strong culture of finding a way,” she said. “Even if you feel like you are having a good game… they’re very opportunistic.” Sullivan said the Spirit will continue to focus on their rest defense to be prepared to counter any of those opportunities, while González mentioned the importance of winning second balls and not allowing the Reign to play in their preferred spaces.
Key Player: Sofia Cantore
Though she came onto the team last year already a star in Italy, Sofia Cantore has shown a lot of improvement this year. At a recent press conference, González complimented her increasing ability to play in behind and in pockets and connections with teammates, as well as her already strong hold-up play. Her confidence has translated into success on the pitch, including scoring a brace last weekend against Orlando Pride.
Watch Out For: Mia Fishel
With only three appearances so far this year, Mia Fishel is still searching for her first goal of the season, but she has a known history of scoring bangers and had some of the Reign’s best chances last week, frequently taking shots within the six-yard box.
Challenges: The Spirit will need to stay sharp in front of goal to get past Seattle’s Claudia Dickey, now considered the number one keeper for the U.S. Women’s National Team.
Previously: The Spirit won both matches against the Reign last year.
