Washington Spirit vs. NJ/NY Gotham FC: Semifinal preview, time, and how to watch
Washington Spirit’s road to the NWSL Championship doesn’t get any smoother this weekend, when they face super team NJ/NY Gotham FC at home in Buzzard Point for the quarterfinal round.
The youngest team in the semifinals, Washington rely heavily on their talented rookie class, as well as young stars like Trinity Rodman and Tara McKeown. They faced a tough challenge against Bay FC in the quarterfinal round, eventually winning 2-1 in extra time. Though they prevailed through a combination of luck, individual performance, and their trademark problem-solving skills, their injury-depleted roster could struggle if they have to face another 120-minute battle today.
Gotham FC are a high-pressing team with a deep bench and the intelligence to switch positions on the fly to make sure they cover as much space as possible. Not content with resting on their laurels after winning the 2023 NWSL Championship, they went on to add well-known veterans (including 3 players on ESPN’s recent top 50 list) to a roster that could just win another. Gotham also played to a 2-1 win in extra time in the quarterfinals (besting Portland Thorns), but have enough game-ready players to potentially outlast the younger Spirit.
These teams were evenly matched during the regular season, both earning 56 points and with the goal differential favoring the Spirit by just two. The Spirit won both of their early-season contests, but both teams have changed since then. In Gotham’s case, that included the addition of shot-stopper Ann-Katrin Berger in goal, while in Washington’s case, the season-ending injuries of Croix Bethune and Andi Sullivan were perhaps more notable.
For more details on how these teams match up statistically, read André Carlisle’s analysis on Beyond the Vaudevillian Cane.
The Spirit will once again be relying on a full stadium of fans to give them a boost of energy in difficult moments. The team reported that the game sold out in just 72 hours after the game was scheduled, although some standing-room only and resale tickets are still available.
Key Player: Rosemonde Kouassi
Rosemonde Kouassi returns from a two-game suspension today and should help provide some of the dynamism Washington lacked on attack last week. The 22-year-old Ivorian forward joined the Spirit in mid-season and made an immediate impact on the pitch, helping to fill the void created by the injuries of Croix Bethune and Ouleye Sarr. In just eight matches, she’s made two assists and become second on the team for shot-creating actions per 90.
Watch Out For: Esther González
Spanish forward Esther González can threaten the Spirit both through her smart positioning and deadly accurate passes. She leads Gotham with nine goals and four assists but perhaps more concerning is how many of those have been in the last five matches. Scoring five goals and one assist in her final four regular season matches, González is in exceptional form coming into this game.
Challenges: Washington’s all-rookie midfield could struggle to keep possession and find the forward line in the face of Gotham’s high-press. Leicy Santos could help, particularly with ball movement, but it’s not clear whether she’s ready to play a full 90 after returning from injury last week.
Previously: The Spirit beat Gotham 2-0 in two competitions this year.

Thanks, Annie. I’ll be at Buzzard Point so won’t be commenting on this thread until after our victory.
I wonder if I’m gonna be the commenter for this one?
Hope others who couldn’t be in person join me
Amén. The Spirit and their DP coverage deserve more followers among the Commentariat.
Don’t get me wrong, I hope as many as possible are helping the Buzzard Point atmosphere, but I know that’s not universal
I’m off at a funeral today and about to make the 2 hr drive back or I’d join you.
Gotham pressing super aggressively and with plenty of success early. Spirit have to survive this stretch, cuz this intensity is unlikely to last all game, but can’t go down early
Big counterattack that Santos forces a good save out of Gotham’s gk
Underrated save by Gotham’s gk again, this time a kick save covering the near post from a Kouassi shot
This is a back and forth battle early and often
Berger, Gotham’s gk, I remember now had a very moving podcast interview describing her battle with cancer. She’s battling a knock in game now. Obviously I want the Spirit to win, but I want Berger to make it to the end
In the stadium, Trin looks low energy (for her) off the ball early in the game. Hoping she’s just conserving energy and there’s nothing wrong.
Rodman seemed to gain power last game, hopefully same thing this game
Mesmerizing game. Strong departments across the field for both teams.
Kingsbury is amazing
Kouassi having a terrific game on the dribble, needs to lay it off and find players more, though
Mckeown can’t quite wrap her body around a shot in a crazy volley attempt with her back basically to goal to start.
If you had told me this half would be scoreless, I’d probably have not have heard you over the crowd atmosphere and enthralling, pulsating game this is. Also, I would not have believed you based on the opening five minutes
Kingsbury save in Lavelle (?) breakaway was huge. Crowd may be hair bigger than last week.
Think it was Esther
I stand corrected. I knew that it was someone normally lethal.
Hate to be the bearer of bad news… Lynn Williams is available off the bench for Gotham
Attendance 19,365
It was a smart header, but Esther’s goal should not be enough to win this game, just on aesthetic grounds
Ratcliffe coming in for Kouassi late. Really need the extra passing ability to unlock this defense
Spirit rise! Holy shit! Hershfelt!!!
Assist: Rookie
Goal: Rookie.
Lots of players to come back.
Future is bright
My goodness, nearly a repeat on a corner!
Rodman down in some pain
Something to keep on eye on: Two Gotham players, including their right back, are on yellows, no Spirit players so far.
Damn, Krueger gets a yellow, I just think that’s a brutal battle and arguably a foul on neither
Amazing interplay on the right almost gives Esther a second
Rodman draws the second yellow from Bruninha. Great play
Berger with a touch save to deny Hatch
Gotham is such a scummy team. Glad they had a player sent off. Keeper should be too. How many times is she’s gonna get “hurt”?
That’s harsh on Berger, she’s an absolute warrior, either of us would be whimpering in the corner if we had whatever knock she’s likely experiencing
That knock from Hatch, sure. She’s gone down 3 times before that just to let Gotham get a timeout. It’s such a dumb and desperate thing that’s creeped into soccer and I pray FIFA finds a way to stop it.
Not to mention the bad and dirty fouls Gotham has committed all game. They are like a wannabe City or Arsenal.
Goalies can get away with shit, I just don’t buy Berger as a problem player
I don’t like when ANY keeper does it. Just holding Berger to the same standards.
You’re assuming she’s not struggling with sever pain at times. I doubt you’re right
Still tied after the first period of extra time, adv Spirit, all to play for
I don’t know how much of the atmosphere comes through on the field, but I’ve been at Audi for nearly every United and Spirit game since it opened, and this is easily the best atmosphere I’ve ever had here, it’s incredible!
This level of competition deserves it. Hopefully United rise soon to match them
I second that. Tremendous crowd noise. It seems that supporters section doesn’t have drummers, however, or is that just my faulty hearing?
Second Hatch chance Hatch hasn’t converted
Geez, some big chances for Gotham late, despite the red
Pks
Berger gets a hand to it, but Hatch remains perfect with the power
Kingsbury stuffs a bad one from Esther
Silano with a good pk the most high pressure moment of her career
Kingsbury for mayor
Nay, Sultan
Mckeown with an absolutely lethal roller
KINGSBURY IS THE GOAT!!!!!!!
The PK shootout: decided by multiple knockouts by both Kingsbury and the Spirit takers. They could have done this all day. Stunning.
Kingsbury should legitimately be made Queen of DC for the rest of the weekend
Man, no one celebrates with the intensity of Hershfelt
Officially my favorite moment in a game with a lot of them late: security almost taking Jona out while he was taking a lap hyping the fans, because they thought he was a pitch invader!
I saw that. It was amazing.
Thanks for the job the DP is doing. And about 2 1/2 hours after the game, the Post still doesn’t have an article up and didn’t have anything pre-game either. Goff is in St. Louis for the USMNT–so I can understand him being out. But “Soccer Insider” is still apparently dead (as a page) and it looks like, other than Goff, other folks who’ve covered soccer were assigned to this match.
