Spirit win, DC Power draw, and more: Labor Day Freedom Kicks

Happy Labor Day, folks. It’s the unofficial last day of summer, so get your fun on before we get back to the grind. A short set of links today as a result so we can enjoy the holiday:

Washington Spirit come from behind to defeat Portland Thorns 2-1 (DP)

Bethi! Her late goal was the difference as the Spirit get their first ever road win in Portland.

Get the best of Stars and Stripes FC on the new SB Nation app (SBN)

On September 1st, SB Nation debuted their new app. For those of you who still follow sites on there (like Stars & Stripes FC!), the app is really cool and has a nice interface to keep everything together. I helped with testing and it’s definitely an app that I can use daily.

D.C. United’s Match Against FC Cincinnati Postponed Due to Inclement Weather (DCU)

After multiple rain delays, DC United’s road match against FC Cincinnati never started and was postponed. There is no word on when the makeup date will be.

DC Power battled Sporting Jacksonville at home to a 1-1 draw, moving their unbeaten streak to three matches.

It was a wild one at Segra on Friday as Colorado Springs Switchbacks beat Loudoun United 5-4. Loudoun is sitting in 10th place, 9 points below the playoff line.

Italy stuns United States in U20 Women’s World Cup opener (ESPN)

The U-20 Women’s World Cup has begun, and the USA were upset by Italy 2-1. They’ll try to get back on track against Japan on Wednesday.

16-year-old Cavan Sullivan welcomes LeBron James to Philly after scoring: MLS roundup (The Guardian)

Cavan Sullivan is on fire, scoring a goal in his third straight match for the Philadelphia Union. I would definitely like to see him in USMNT camp later this month.

North Carolina midfielder Ashley Sanchez sets U.S. scoring record — USWNT could be next (The Athletic)

If Cavan Sullivan is on fire, Ashley Sanchez is an inferno. She scored a hat trick against the Chicago Stars over the weekend, setting the record for most goals in a single season by an American with 18. She’s 2 off Temwa Chawinga’s record of 20 in a season, and the Courage have 7 matches left.

Enjoy the holiday, everyone.

Donald Wine has been a soccer fan since he first kicked a ball as a kid. He moved to DC in 2007 and quickly joined the soccer scene, helping to establish the DC chapter of the American Outlaws and serving as one of the capos and drummers for over a decade. He is currently the manager of Stars & Stripes FC, but this community is where he got his start, and he continues to contribute to anything DC soccer related for this site because he enjoys it so much.
