Another Audi Field friendly announced, NWSL lose two matches to WSL, and more: Tuesday Freedom Kicks

Happy Tuesday, everyone! We should be getting some unseasonably cool weather today, and I for one am thrilled. If only it would hold for the Spirit’s NWSL-WSL double-header this Sunday.

Still looking for a location for a permanent Spirit training facility, Michele Kang now says she’s open to anywhere in the DC region. Sounds like the Commanders’ possible move complicated her original plans to be in D.C.

Audi Field has announced a new friendly on September 8: exactly what the struggling pitch needs at a time when they have three soccer teams using it as their home.

The game will be played at Estadio… Akron? Sounds like the USMNT are playing in the Midwest, even abroad.

The second match of the NWSL versus WSL mini-series also went to the English league, with Gotham FC falling 3-1 to Chelsea.

This is perhaps the only good news to come out of this series for the Americans.

Leagues Cup: Which semifinalist is most likely to lift the trophy? (ESPN)
Checking in on another inter-league series: MLS has fared better than the NWSL, boasting all four semifinalists in the Leagues Cup. This author thinks the Crew will win it all, which feels like a safe bet though not a certain one.

This came out over the weekend, but it’s worth a watch if you’re interested in the Canada soccer drone scandal. Washington’s Gabby Carle had a lot to say about the team’s now suspended coach, including that she feels Bev Priestman failed to take responsibility for the spy, after allegedly telling the team she would do so.

Chelsea get outclassed, Madrid so-so in Mbappé’s LaLiga debut, more (ESPN)
A summary of the big stories in the first weekend of European men’s soccer this season, to help you sound informed at parties.

That’s all I have for you today. Have a good week!

Per Goff, Boris Enow has received his first call-up to the Cameroon National Team and will miss DC’s game against Chicago on September 7. Hopefully there is not another rash of injuries before then

Congratulations to Enow, and always nice to have players from our team that can rep their countries. Hopefully Finland doesn’t also have a game then and Matti Peltola can slip in to the CDM role.

Agreed. Missing Enow, Peltola, and Herrera (which seems possible) would be rough. Especially against Chicago which, on paper, should be a winable game. Wouldn’t make much difference if the game was against Columbus or something, but alas

Something I really hate about the Leagues Cup is how it adds another huge dead period for clubs that either don’t participate or don’t advance from the group stage. The regular season’s momentum was completely killed. Teams like DCU don’t use that time to market to our locals and loses all interest to the European leagues (not to mention the Spirit).

Open Cup > Leagues Cup and doesn’t create deadspace.
