Washington Spirit win big, DC United lose big, and more: Monday Freedom Kicks

Happy Monday, everyone! I hope y’all had a great holiday weekend. I am back from a jaunt to Vegas and am on the way to NYC for the Olympic media day for both the USWNT and the USMNT U-23s. The men’s roster will be released in full today, but we learned that Griffin Yow will be on the roster and Kevin Paredes is also expected to make the cut. Here’s some news from over the weekend…

The Spirit win again, destroying Bay FC on the road to give Jonatan Giráldez his first victory as head coach.

Meanwhile, DC United lost on the road to Orlando in big fashion, adding to what is now an 11-match winless streak.

Euro 2024: Spain strike late to eliminate hosts Germany in ET (ESPN)

Spain took out hosts Germany in the quarterfinals of Euro 2024. Your semifinals: Spain vs. France and Netherlands vs. England.

Tennis fans started celebrating England winning their quarterfinal match on penalties, making for a sports crossover moment.

Uruguay defeated Brazil on penalties to move onto the Copa America semifinals. The semifinals in that tournament: Argentina vs. Canada and Uruguay vs. Colombia.

USMNT great Ramos urges U.S. Soccer to replace Berhalter with foreign coach (Pro Soccer Wire)

Should US Soccer decide to let Gregg Berhalter go and hire another USMNT head coach, Tab Ramos thinks it should be a foreign coach. It’s going to be the biggest lingering story of the week until the federation announces what it’s going to do at some point this week.

The US U-20 Rugby Men’s National Team continued pool play in the World Rugby U-20 Trophy tournament in Scotland this past weekend. They held off Uruguay 32-15 and are top of their pool with 1 game to go. At the U-20 level the US now leads the all time series 3 games to 2. With Uruguay winning with a converted try in the 75th minute last year 33-31.

Uruguay are tied in 2nd with The Netherlands at 1-1 with Kenya at 0-2. The US wraps up pool play against Kenya on Friday at 9:30 AM EDT. If the US continue their current run of form and beat Kenya then they will take Pool B and face the winner of Pool A (either Scotland or Japan) in the final on July 17th at 2:45 PM EDT.

7th place playoff is Pool A 4th vs Pool B 4th

5th place playoff is Pool A 3rd vs Pool B 3rd

3rd place Playoff is Pool A 2nd vs Pool B 2nd

Final is Pool A 1st vs Pool B 1st

The winner of the final will be promoted in play in next years U-20 Championship, which takes place at the same time. Both times the US has competed in the U-20 Championship (2008 (first one) and 2014) they have been relegated down to the U20 Trophy.

Last Friday night the USA Men’s Eagles XVs fell short against Romania as their mistakes cost them in a narrow 22-20 loss.

….In 3 of our last 4 games, a DCU player has received a red card….Dajome vs NYRB, Benteke vs Houston, and now Tubbs vs Orlando….The only game we didn’t get a red card in was the 3-2 loss to Cincy last Wednesday…

Wasn’t the red at Orlando to someone else? I believe Tubbs was subbed off before the red took place. I could be wrong though. Referees are out of hand. Didn’t they also send off Busquets for arguing a yellow?

Lets not forget the game against Houston had 2 Red Cards: One to Benteke AND one to Akinmbony.
Also the Orlando red was to Bartlett
