Yesterday, the Washington Spirit revealed its 2023 home and away kits, and the departure from their normal blue, red, and white colors were a surprise to many. The move to solid black and white comes as the team, via majority owner Y. Michele Kang, expressed its intention to rebrand the franchise via team colors and even possibly the team name.

The monochrome black home jerseys and monochrome white away jerseys signal that transition, with “everything” on the table. The hope is that the Spirit fanbase and the D.C. soccer community at large will get to voice their input at the direction of the club as it explores the look the team could sport on the field in the future.

So, let’s include the community! Before we get into the exercise, it’s important to look at what other teams in the NWSL have done as we seek to establish our new, unique identity. Looking at the official team colors of the other 11 teams in the league, here are the colors that they’re working with, with the number of teams that list it or a variation as a team color:

  • White (7 teams)
  • Black (6)
  • Blue (6)
  • Red (5)
  • Gold (2)
  • Teal (2)
  • Pink (2)
  • Purple (2)
  • Orange (1)
  • Green (1)

It’s clear that many of the teams in the league utilize similar colors, even with every team but NJ/NY Gotham FC listing at least three official team colors. Of course, every team in the league is required to have a white jersey, which further limits the creativity teams have. Still, it feels like the league is moving towards allowing for more creativity with its jerseys and team colors.

So, this is where you come in! The team wants to hear from the community…well, let’s start with our wonderful community. What team colors should the Washington Spirit adopt starting in 2024? Discuss in the comments with the colors you think we should have, and get creative with it!!

Dark shorts!

I’d rock with a seafoam green or teal, with like a grey or black

I like primary colors in red white and blue. This is the Capitol and the primary industry is government. Hoops of red and white for home jersey. White with pale blue stars for away jersey. Whatever the team does it should have been finished by now. Why saddle the Spirit with these warm up jerseys for a year.

For home build on the past: Navy shirts with red built into the design. Away: Yellow and Orange.

Make them more expressive and interesting. That’s what we want the players to feel like on the field.

Simply represent the District’s flag, red & white with gold added for continuity for Commanders supporters.
