FIFA proposes U23 Olympics for women, new Gold Cup format, and more: Friday Freedom Kicks
Bonjour from Quebec! Just a shorty from me today as I am still on vacation. I have not had nearly enough poutine on this trip, although I have had some very good food.
FIFA wants talks over restricting women’s Olympic football to U23s (The Guardian)
Boo! Leave the women’s game alone, FIFA!
Concacaf Sets Stage for 2027 Gold Cup with Exciting New Format and Dates (Concacaf)
“Exciting” though it may be, I’m not sure this new format makes a lot of sense. Eight teams per group, but just four group stage games each?
They made an explainer video as well. We’ll see if I can get the link to work!
I admit I have less strong feelings on this one. What do you guys think? Would the change have been good for college soccer?
Why every playoff team will or won’t win the NWSL Championship (ESPN)
Get and/or stay hyped for this weekend’s Washington Spirit playoff game! I am… nervous.
That’s all from me. Please share your own links in the comments!
Of note for DCU, it was announced earlier this week that Sogut would be handling the pre-match press conference today instead of Weiler. It’s also been noted now that Bartlett will be with Sogut. Not sure what that means for Weiler, but it could be something to keep an eye on.
I’ve been told that Weiler will do the postgame press conference tomorrow and that Sogut wanted to take questions about the season.
Good to know! The press release made it seem like Weiler might be on his way out, but maybe that’s not the case
Sadly wouldn’t surprise me with this ownership group.
