DC United vs. New York Red Bulls: Preview, time, and how to watch
DC United is back on the field tonight as the Atlantic Cup rivalry resumes with a match against the New York Red Bulls. DC United knows three points are necessary after taking a 4-0 thumping at the hands of Inter Miami last weekend.
The Black-and-Red are starting to have their backs against the wall in their quest to make the playoffs for the first time since 2019. The loss to Miami on the road pushed the team back to 12th in the MLS Eastern Conference standings. They go up against a Red Bull team that sits in 8th place, just six points above DC but also above the playoff line. It gives the match some added heat, which is needed for a rivalry that the league has relegated to mostly midweek matchups. The last one was a wild one, with the teams leaving Sports Illustrated Stadium back on April 22nd with a point each in a 4-4 draw that was ridiculous from start to finish.
DC United still have seven matches remaining in the regular season starting with the one tonight. That’s time for them to build the momentum they need to get into the playoffs. However, it’s the start of a seven-game stretch that will span just 25 days, so getting points in each match is vital for them to move up the table and get into the playoffs. They hope to get it started tonight by beating the Red Bulls and also win the Atlantic Cup for the first time since 2021.

Rene Weiler’s pre-match press conference for NYRB lasted only 1:57, or I did I miss something?
Steel yourself Talonesque… Peltola is warming up with the subs group again.
And Stroud is definitely the player you want to summon for this man down stretch, Peltola hasn’t featured into stoppage. Now that’s a grudge (that no one fucking gets).
Lineup: Johnson; Hefti, Bartlett, Rowles, Kurokawa; Nono, Dozzell, Servania; Hopkins, Baribo, Avilez (!!!)
What’s the bench?
Bono, Peltola, Peglow, Stroud, Nealus, Ordaz, Markovic, Castillo, Turner
Showing a Hell is real ad ahead of The Atlantic Cup! Then again it feels like MLS is trying to bury The Atlantic Cup.
Oh crap AppleTV commentators said Kijima is done for the season with the injury.
I heard that too. Hopefully they misspoke
Penalty for DC!
PK! And Baribo…scores it!
If Rowles picks up a yellow tonight he’ll be suspended for the next game due to yellow card accumulation.
Switched over to local radio broadcast so I can hear Dave Johnson.
That probably should be a red card on Bartlett. Lucky. Guys about to shoot and then he pulls him down.??
Bartlett gets away with a yellow card on what could have been a DOGSO
Hopkins joins Bartlett in the book.
Hard to watch this team even when they are winning.
Credit to Weiler, all that matters are the three points tonight. Hope they can see out the result.
Avilez looks gassed out there
Avilez forces a save out of Horvath.
HEFTI HEFTI HEFTI!
I’ve only been able to tune into the last few minutes, just saw the Hefti goal
Nothing can seem foul to those DCU fans watching a halftime lead on the Redbulls.
Kurokawa corner to Baribo to Hefti who puts it in the net! 2-0 to the good guys.
And from what I’ve seen of Avilez out there even briefly, Weiler needs to do some sort of ancient ritual to absolve himself for all those times he played or subbed Stroud this season.
Bear in mind we have a game in hand on a lot of teams only 3 points above us.
In that context, Baribo is looking positively spritely out there. He’s had a tough time with injuries and this half of the season, but maybe the up shot is that his body now recovered isn’t as ground down as many other team’s lynchpins
Avilez showed a great bit of thought to check his run and stay (get back) onside during that breakaway, but then also looked a bit like a teenager, getting the ball at his feet in the box and too surprised to do anything with it. Regardless, I remain team Play The Damn Youth
Stroud is going to fuck up plays going forward and be a mirage of defensive presence for his teammates to be let down by.
Not so much a prophecy as every single game he’s featured in.
Which, Kijima’s injury leaves us with a limited bench, but I’m pretty sure his injury was the result of getting an insanely intense starting match in Miami his previous use had not conditioned him for remotely.
Weiler was wrong about him.
Sigh. Pretty sure the only person who doesn’t know this is Weiler.
6 total subs, 2 for DC:
Stroud and Peglow on for Hopkins and Avilez
Had a moment of confusion where I looked at Forsburg and went, “Brek Shea?” And then I remembered that I’ve been watching this league for way too long.
For Avery has a similar look and vibe, but his ratio of dynamism to knowing how to impact play is the opposite
It was purely the hair and a little shove off the ball, a momentary stray thought
Absolutely stupid red for Bartlett for delaying the restart
He was already on a yellow what was he thinking.
Maybe the referee was thinking that Bartlett should have had a red card earlier and so was looking for any excuse to pull out the second yellow? So yes, Bartlett should not have been playing games after the yellow/orange card?
I’ll take “things that would never happen to a NY franchise” for 5000
2-1
Well crud…here comes the blown win and dropping points.
Nealis just earned his entire contract with that play, holy smokes
Seriously, if by some stroke of divine respite we eek into the playoffs, I’m returning to what Nealis did so that Rowles could clear it there, that’s insane technique in clutch circumstances
Nealis (the good one) saves what was surely going to be a goal from NY
Baribo had some big words for Stroud after that little display of Stroud-ness
Someone tell Stroud his job is to be an outlet and presser or backline and gk before they get to the low block
Cuz at least then he’s out of the way
That was fun
The post saves our bacon on that Forsburg shot
Or was it a shot from Harper.
The inside of that post kisses us good luck, Lordy
That’s a very gentle but crucial fingertip from Johnson to send that just to the ping, margins
It only took them 20 minutes to get possession in New York’s half
We’re a man down with a lead, so….
I can’t believe he has not brought Peltola on yet
The scoreboard has decided that the NYRB side of its scoreline is none of its business. The kind of petty this once-great rivalry should specialize in, truly.
Funny. There’s a lot wrong with that scoreboard these days. I know it just needs to be reprogrammed or tossed in the garbage heap
The photo I was trying to post to go with this comment
How is that not a card on Bazan?
5 mins of stoppage
Baribo is pissed with Bazan about something.
We won! We actually won!
We get it up the field, but Johnson has to make one last late save because Stroud thinks he’s about to run the defender like Gareth Bale, just puts it out of bounds, and then doesn’t bother the crosser on his side.
Someone should turn him on to paralegal courses.
My detestation of Stroud and his continued minutes aside,
Probably the most fun win narrative against NJ at home since Ben Olsen got a hattrick.
Miami beat NYC, Toronto and Orlando tied, New England beat Cincy so all the results went our way tonight.
As Don Garber is about to say: “You’ve got to be fucking kidding me”
