DC Power win, DC United and Spirit lose, and more: Monday Freedom Kicks

Happy Monday. We had quite a bit of soccer on TV as most of the major European leagues kicked off their seasons. However, we begin right here at home with the local teams.

DC Power scores early, often in huge win over Brooklyn FC (DP)

DC Power was the lone winner this weekend among the local teams, torching Brooklyn FC on the road to get their first win of the season.

Washington Spirit fall 1-0 to Orlando Pride in third straight home loss (Green Line Soccer)

What a frustrating match. The Spirit dominated in every way except on the scoreboard. One early mistake was the difference as Orlando win at Audi Field.

D.C. United can’t hold Charlotte FC in 3-1 road loss (Green Line Soccer)

DC United fell apart in the second half, losing to Charlotte FC on the road. The lack of points over the past few games have now caught up with them, as they sit below the playoff line now.

With 9 points from 10 matches — and 1 win in that span — D.C. United back below playoff line and on course to miss out for 7th straight year — an almost impossible feat in playoff-drunk MLS.One playoff win in previous 10 years, 0 conference finals since 2012.Common denominator? 🤔

Jacob Murrell leaves DC United in transfer to Falkirk FC (DP)

On Friday, Jacob Murrell officially secured a transfer to Falkirk FC in Scotland. Hopefully he can do well there and get a ton of playing time.

Loudoun United got another scoreless draw this weekend, this time at home against New Mexico United. They hit the road this coming weekend to face El Paso Locomotive.

CONCACAF and UEFA eye joint Nations League (SSFC)

Could there be a joint Nations League between Concacaf and UEFA? They’re discussing it!

In one of the shock twists, Esther Gonzalez, who left Gotham FC a few weeks ago due to personal reasons that she said required her to move home to Spain, has now signed with Al Qadsiah in Saudi Arabia. If I’m Gotham, I’m UPSET at this.

Man United slip to surprise Hull defeat as Premier League begins (ESPN)

Hull City had the upset of the weekend, taking out Manchester United to open up the Premier League season.

Infantino angers Concacaf nations by hijacking meeting in Caribbean (The Guardian)

One this we never do, and this applies to everyone: we never mess with the Caribbean Football Union. Gianni Infantino did just that, and he can’t get away with it.

Liga MX closes door on pro/rel and embraces Americanization of Mexican soccer (The Athletic)

Liga MX has essentially ended pro/rel, which has a bunch of people in shambles. But Liga MX club owners hope they can stablize their financials and bring in more money.

Pre-season optimism quickly fades for some fans (BBC)

Yep…the first matchday can do that for you.

Enjoy the day, y’all.

What is going on with Spirit? I can identify two problems, defense and offense. 🙂 Defensive mistake and only one goal given up. Ok, they have come back from worse. Why can’t they score? The team is good enough to score multiple goals each game. I am sure the team is frustated by all of this, too.

DCU lost on set pieces.

Paredes is banned for 10 games. Definately, deserved.

It’s my birthday!

Also, DC United are on the express train to the Eastern Conference cellar.

Fascinating to read about the Liga-MX decision. They talk about how they want to move to the “MLS Model.”

I wish all the best for Jacob Murrell.

As far as Esther goes, signing in Saudi? Really, as a woman, that’s an environment you want to go to? I don’t think Gotham was that bummed about her leaving–it probably freed up cap space for Sam Kerr. But still, this is screwy.
