DC Power FC @ Brooklyn FC: Preview, time, and how to watch
DC Power FC looks to regroup and get their first win of the season tonight when they travel up to the five boroughs to take on Brooklyn FC. DC Power is coming off a 1-0 loss to Carolina Ascent in their season opener.
DC Power wasn’t able to generate the scoring chances they wanted against Carolina, and despite an incredible game by goalkeeper Katie Cappalletti, they still dropped points. They’re treating this match as a must win to try and keep pace during the sprint season. Head coach Omid Namazi says besides trying to make better decisions in the final third, the midfield will have an opportunity to dictate the momentum.
“I feel like the middle of the field is an area where I feel like we can really dominate and overload that part of the field and get ourselves into the attacking half,” Namazi said to the press earlier this week. “A lot of our work this week has been 3v2s and 4v3s…going to goal when we break that first line of pressure because [Brooklyn] is going to come out and they really try to press you with a front four. So if you bypass that four or you get through that four, you have numbers going forward.”
Namazi made note of the number of players that were unavailable during the season opener due to injury. He’s hopeful that many of them will be able to go tonight.
“Gianna [Gourley]…she was healthy until a couple days before the [Carolina] game and she pulled up with a quad strain, but she has gotten better,” Namazi said. She trained fully [on Wednesday] and she’s available. Her role will be probably limited. I haven’t decided whether it’s the start of the game or bringing her off the bench, but she’s ready to go at least 35, 45 minutes maybe if we start her and then the other players.”
Forward Alyssa Walker has an ankle bruise that has limited her, and Namazi wanted to see how she responded in training before making a decision on her status. Defender Sarah McCoy is “almost there,” and could factor in a substitute role tonight. Namazi is excited about what she could bring to the field when fully healthy. Defender Paige Almendariz has been ruled out for the season due to an ACL injury that she suffered in the final few weeks of last season. She had surgery to repair the ACL, which will keep her on the injured list until at least the 2027 season.
Still, DC Power want to come out and generate some goals and get a win under their belt. They know that’s crucial for a short season and they don’t want to add any pressure in their quest to make the playoffs. They hope to bring 3 points home from Brooklyn tonight.
