DC United @ New York City FC: Preview, time, and how to watch

DC United is back on the road this afternoon as they take on New York City FC in Queens. DC United is coming off a come-from-behind win against Orlando City, and they’re hoping they can continue the momentum on the road against the Pigeons.

DC United’s win against Orlando was their lone win in 5, while NYCFC has lost 3 of their last 5 matches with 2 draws, and they’re coming off a 1-0 loss to CF Montreal last weekend. Both teams will have to contend with injuries, but that means others will have to step up in their absence.

For DC United, they have scored 7 goals in their past 2 matches, and they hope they can continue that without Tai Baribo, who will not be able to play today. Still, without him last weekend, the Black-and-Red were able to put 3 in the back of the net, and they want that to continue in Queens. A win can vault them from 10th to 5th in the Eastern Conference table, and they hope to bring three points back from the boroughs tonight.

DC United @ NYCFC

Location: Citi Field, Queens

Kickoff time: 3:00pm ET

Available streaming: Apple TV

Here’s hoping no one gets hurt today playing on a field laid over a baseball diamond. I still remember what happened to Kris Korb back in the day and it basically ended his career.

Stupid that this match is at the same time as the Spurs match.

A bit torn.

I do want DCU to get that rare home away win on this unprofessional pillbox of a field.

But if DCU is able to score on Matt Freese without Baribo, it’s gonna be a ROUGH summer tournament

It’s at Citi Field instead of Yankee, so it’s not quite as small

The space between the the edge of the penalty boxes and the edge of the field is still absurdly tight

Hefti is going full tilt early

Dc has NO ONE back defending on a corner and almost gets burned on the counter, but the NYC shot ends up being wide

Seevania has the best chance of anyone so far and make Freese work for it. Peglow puts it over the bar shortly after

Hopkins with a truly elephantine touch on a ball in the box rather than a chance. It wasn’t straightforward coming in, but still hard to see why it wound up 9 feet in the air for the defender to clear when it returned to earth

LOUIS shows again that he can in fact kick the ball really hard. Shot ends up just wide from like…40 yards out?

More than 20 minutes in, and DCU have 71% possession against NYCFC?!

Time to check the sky for those pigs

LOUIS kicks the ball hard…into the net! 1-0 DC

Louis scores from point blank as the ball trots to him like a thoroughly attached pet.

1-0

1-0 DC at the half. NYC has had a few decent chances, but DC has largely controlled the game so far

Our xg at the friggin half is 1.76 points higher than NYCFC. The half, mind you.

Not my favorite overall stat in the world, xg, but that IS fun

I have a desperate need to see why the hell DC wasn’t able to get a shot off in the box there. Camera angle was far too crappy to capture it, but also, baffling that it broke down given the players and where they were configured

Herrera for Stroud, and Markovic for Hopkins.

Is Servania playing as second striker now? Haven’t heard his name called for a play yet, but I think that’s the shape?

Geez, Louis gifted a weak rebound off Freese outside the box, shoots it right into his torso. Had options, could have run it

Looks like a PK coming our way, barring review

It stands

We about to discover if Louis can take a pk…

Verdict: Yep

Think a number of people would call that soft for the pk call, but it is the case that the knockdown was unrelated to any contestation for the ball in the air, so definitionally a foul elsewhere on the pitch. Seems like a good call

Is Kurokawa skyhook from The Dark Knight?

Cuz he snagged that wide open breakaway out of the air with his foot with a play that was custom built to snag it

But for NYCFC getting thoroughly ticked off after the 84th minute or so, and burning the rubber on the road trying to get on the scoresheet, this was about as comfortable a win as I could expect DCU to find.

Largely a performance built on no-nonsense refusal to be easy to play through in countless moments peppered throughout, and a desire to move forward with decent understanding with a turnover.

Good show.

Nashville is gonna be one hell of a test next week, but this was definitely a good showing.

Maybe it will be helpful for DCU if Nashville exhaust themselves playing in Mexico tomorrow? Or maybe they will get an adrenaline/momentum boost from a historic win?

Maybe DCU is a better team without Gabriel Pirani?
