DC United @ Red Bull New York: Preview, time, and how to watch
DC United are back on the road as they continue up I-95 to take on the New York Red Bulls. It’s the first edition of the Atlantic Cup this season, and the Black-and-Red hope it can be a time to reboot their season.
DC United enter the match clinging to the 9th and final playoff pot in the table, with Red Bull three points ahead. Coming off a scoreless draw in Philly, René Weiler will hope the offense can finally be present and put points on the board. DC hasn’t scored a goal in league play since March 14th and have been held scoreless in 5 of their 8 league matches this season. With goalscoring being one of the major needs the club sought to address in their offseason moves, Weiler hopes that can get going to help put pressure on the Red Bulls.
As Weiler seeks to change the culture of the club, it’s clear the players understand the focus needs to be on the fight they bring to the field. That includes understanding the moment of the rivalry and knocking the rust off what should be Major League Soccer’s prized rivalry game. Bringing three points back to DC at the expense of their archrivals would help inject some energy back into the season for the team and the fanbase.

So how bad are we losing tonight?
Unleash the Romanian Messi!!!!!
Gheorge Hagi? Adrian Mutu?
My prediction, FWIW, is a one-one tie, with Tai Baribo scoring the goal for DCU.
Maybe if we score a goal, then the floodgates will open…
Jason Anderson has some excellent insights for DCU fans at his Green Line Soccer article.
In addition to all of Donald’s great points!
Nights like this are when I really hate being a DC United fan. I could be doing anything else — going to the gym, catching a movie, watching the Nationals, but I’ll be watching DCU.
Standard lineup for DC, with Servania coming back on for Markovic
Pirani still MIA
Peglow scores, but it’s called back for offsides. VAR taking a look now
That should’ve been a goal.
We get a complement from Dax McCarty saying that this is the best he’s seen DC look this year. And he’s got a bit of a point so far. Let’s see if we can maintain that
And New Jersey scores on like their second attack of the game
And now it’s 2-0. The first 15 minutes were great, not so much now
This game is over.
Brutal thus far. Midfield is non-existent. Attacking threat is non-existent. Defensively they have been easy to break down too, depriving this side of the one thing they have hung their hat on – being tough to beat. Good or bad, this is one of those games where we will learn a lot about the character of this side.
Wait we score?
Hopkins scores!
Correction, Hopkins assist for Baribo
RBNY demonstrating once again that the super-high line is a very sharply double-edged sword.
Hopkins and Baribo almost get it done again, but it’s slightly wide
Hopkins with another great cross that Baribo puts just wide.
My perhaps cynical take is that just about everything that happened is down to NY’s tactics and decisions. We had a much better mentality for progression than has been on evidence so far this year, but if they weren’t inviting balls in behind we wouldn’t have any of those chances. The imbalance in team speed is pretty stark. I don’t rate our chances but do hope the team can stay positive.
Well shit
3-1
3-2!
And damn Hopkins pulls one back right away.
The 400 people in the stadium are certainly getting a show at least
Baribo ties it!
How to waste your team’s distinct advantages, by M. Bradley.
Tie game! 3-3! Baribo gets a second!
We’re in for a shoot out tonight.
Give the coaches some credit with a game plan. Maybe it’s obvious enough, but DCU playing a different game than they’re used to playing. Still not going through the midfield, but they’re much more attack-oriented.
By the way — DC United over RSL at RFK 6-4. The Ed’s Beer match.
Hopkins made that one way too easy for Horvath
4-3 New Jersey
Herrera used and abused on that 4th goal
4-4! Tai Hat trick!
Is there a winner left in this game? I fear Choupo-Moting. No idea why he’s been dropped to the bench.
From my understanding he’s just been outplayed by the 17 year olds
Not used to saying this but what a huge intervention by Bartlett.
There’s at least one more goal in this game and Sean Johnson just kept one out.
Murrell…oof
2 goals for DCU pulled off the board by the refs.
Murrell almost with another famous last-minute winner.
Murrell scores off an assist from Stroud, but the ref decides he doesn’t want NYRB to lose, so he calls it back. 4-4
Passed the character check after a rough portion of the the first half. Statistically the better side at the end. RB lucky to have 4, DC unlucky not to have 5.
Unlucky not to have 6.
Wow, I would not have expected a goal fest in this game. And as some others pointed out, it would have been easy for the team to give up being down 2-0 and they didn’t.
Elsewhere in the league tonight, NYC and Cincinnati also tied 4-4 just across town from us. And Toronto’s goalie scored at the death to tie their game with Philly 3-3
