DC United vs. One Knoxville SC: Preview, time, and how to watch
It’s Cup time! The US Open Cup Round of 32 continues tonight, and DC United enters the tournament. They host USL League One side One Knoxville SC at Audi Field, and the dreams to once again lift the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup trophy begin.
DC United enters the tournament coming off two straight losses in MLS play and needing a lift. They are in the middle of a brutal stretch of games leading up to the World Cup break, so they need to just take it one game at a time. It’s unclear if head coach René Weiler will roll out a lineup that signals that they’re going for it or go for squad rotation to keep everyone fresh. He’s taking it one game at a time, and is only looking to try and advance tonight.
DC United have won the US Open Cup three times before: 1996, 2008, and 2013, the latter of which remains the last trophy the Black-and-Red have won. They hope they can light a new fire of hope against One Knoxville, who beat Asheville City FC on penalties to advance to this point.

I really hope DCU takes this seriously. A decent run is a reasonable goal for this team this year.
For me, I hope they don’t make it a skeleton crew, but it’s a bigger chance for the likes of Clark, Turner, Kijima, and to some extent Murrell to show we have an offensive bench.
And while I don’t believe Louis is a DP level talent, if he’s gonna pop off, he better be able to do it against One Knoxville
Lineup:
Bono; Antley, Markovic, Rowles, Kurokawa; Peglow, Peltola (C), Hopkins, Kijima; Turner, Munteanu
Subs:
Avilez, Farr, Hefti, Murrell, Pirani, Servania, Stroud
Antley looking really sporty early on. Kijima also got a nice shot off, but it got saved
Antley is a quality utility option, his long term injury last season torched our depth
…. Was that Louis who cleared that open header instead of, ya know, at goal?
Not a bad evening for soccer for all 3000 or so who turned up. Might not be a horrible evening of soccer, either.
I’ll always love the Open Cup, and it’s a shame the team doesn’t promote it more. I’m not as tapped in as I usually am this season, but I still pay reasonable attention to the team and am a STH, and I didn’t know this game was happening until Monday.
Ain’t no 3,000 here
Since I sit in 124, most of the crowd is on my side and hard to see, so I tend to round up. Can’t wait for the announced to be 9k+
I have to ask. Did they announce the attendance?
I like that Peltola has the armband tonight. He did a good back tracking back just a few minutes ago.
Atlanta are down 1-0 to Chattanooga elsewhere.
Geez, how can they spend so much and be this hapless?
We’re looking positively flat footed for an unsettling period of this half
Man, Antley can’t catch a break
Wonder if it’s his ribs?
Has anyone figured out why Munteanu was so expensive yet? Is it just that he has a really, really good agent?
There’s gotta be a personal relationship and some shady shit that unlocked this deal. This can’t be a scouting failure- there’s nothing to see.
It remains to be seen if a 7 million dollar DP signing by DCU attracts a real full time journalist to sniff out the truth, cuz it would require some real digging with no cooperation from either club involved. Investigative sports journalists might never get into it, given the population of such pros has shrunk.
We dodged one there I think.
Um, Knoxville got robbed
I’m sure there are legitimate cost concerns for tech across tournament play, given the participants, but Christ
I feel like you have to introduce VAR once USLC or MLS teams come in
It was close, but I didn’t think it was a goal.
However they didn’t show any replays here. Is there an angle on TV that looks like a goal?
It looked like the bounce down cleared the line incontrovertibly by replay standards
Goal line technology would have had no problem confirming
And yeah, I’m watching from home- found out too late that this social thing was rescheduled, at home we all got a good view of the thing
There is one from an angle that made it look like at least some of the ball came down behind the line. The angle obscured how much.
Even from the diagonal angle, you can see in the shot when the ball hits the ground that it’s over, less than a foot, for sure, but not close enough to the line for there to be any real doubt.
It’s legitimately shitty for Knoxville
Well, Knoxville scored. But it’s not counted as having gone in. Not having VAR saves us here
We got lucky there.
Weiler is not messing around in this second half.
Louis has maybe a 10-inch vertical leap.
That was Musk-like in its athleticism
I don’t love the subs at the half. I can see wanting to save Hopkins’ legs, but I thought Turner and Kijima were having decent games.
Turner especially. The engine on that kid, and real intention and skill
I’m convinced there’s a place for Kijima in a successful configuration
I think he’s quite good at combinations in build up play. He’s not a star on his own, but there’s enough touch, ball carrying, short range passing, and soccer intelligence to be a damn good cog
I’m still interested in seeing him as a CM with Peltola, but, at this point , don’t think Weiler is inclined to that idea
I agree that there’s a place for him, but yeah, he doesn’t seem to be Weiler’s guy.
Peltola is tired of waiting for a DP to show up, rips it in
So Peltola has a long range shot!
Well shit
That probably is a foul on Stroud in the run up, but, Stroud is clearly dunzo as an MLS contributor, so, here we go
Weiler clearly waited just long enough to have the “he’s getting fitness back” plausibility subbing Louis Munteanu.
But we all saw what we saw. And no Weekend at Bernie’s squad shenanigans can hide what this looks like.
Anyway, DCU’s behind now.
Well I think we’re in to be Cupset.
Welp, that happened. And then happened again.
Markovic with the clinical finish from the Hefti service
CF Birnbaum, eat your heart out
Hefti with an assist on Markovic’s first goal for the club.
Markovic continues to look like a really good get from the draft (and Aman as well)
If this goes to PKs, Knoxville might need to employ some duct tape to reattach legs
Philly live in hope of drubbing DCU at their house once more. They thought the dream was dead, but all things are possible through exhaustion from a midweek debacle
Absurd, but that should do it
This game still needs a Murrell bicycle kick goal
English Announcers when anything happens: That’s the magic of the FA Cup.
US Open Cup:
Knoxville just tied it…that looked offside but no VAR
Even the even handed announcer just said that Knoxville forward is the striker DCU could use
He didn’t name check Louis Munteanu. He didn’t have to.
The soccer gods when they made this game:
Well shit time for the crap shoot of penalties.
Justice for Jordan Farr
We needed Jordan Farr
Was confident the whole time that Pirani was going to miss. Their goalie was really good at this. But Bono was especially bad at this. Got fooled every time.. We needed Farr
I’m pretty ready to let him juggle or whatever somewhere else
FARR > bono
That performance definitely established one thing: Talonesque is spot on w/r/t Munteanu. There is nothing there. There isn’t going to be anything there. Not fit for USL. Not worth $7.
I appreciate it.
I remember sitting in the stands at the home opener, looking at him, and it wasn’t even 12 minutes later that I started spiraling out over how this signing happened, even as I enjoyed the atmosphere and the morale boosting win.
At this point, this is a wrench in the financial and sporting fabric of the squad that needs repair before it can advance.
(Edit: TBC, I did not have some sort of clear and all-encompassing vision of his overall ability, I just knew he wasn’t a DP, and that his touch was alarming. This display was way, way worse than my mental floor for him).
I definitely think if he isn’t our worst signing ever he is down there….
The transfer to talent ratio is something I don’t know if the league has seen before, and a lot more tha 7 million has been spent in other cases. DCU had gotten flop forwards before, but they probably spent whatever money they got coming here in a year and a half. This is crazy.
Yah, I was shocked by how badly that went. Slow, invisible, weak, untechnical, at best poor off the ball movement, no sense of a role (target, poacher, false nine, slasher, whatevs) that he’d be comfortable in, let alone good at.
I’d rather have started Murrell, and I don’t rate Murrell.
Hell, I’d rather bring back Pajoy. O.o
