International Affairs: DC Power and Spirit April International Window Preview

This year’s April international window finds the different women’s confederations in a variety of modes. Teams in AFC know who is going to the World Cup and who is going to the inter-confederation playoff.  Teams in CONMEBOL, CONCACAF, OFC, and UEFA are working their way through the various byzantine processes they use for qualification. CAF’s delay of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations to July means teams are repeating preparations for the tournament. DC Power and the Washington Spirit have a combined 10 players representing their nations in these matches. Let’s take a look at who received that call and what they’ll be playing for.

Washington Spirit

Leicy Santos (Colombia)

Colombia returns to the CONMEBOL Nations League seeking to secure a direct World Cup qualifying spot after last month’s appearance in the SheBelieves Cup. Heading into match five of nine, Las Cafeteras sit in third place, one point behind first place Venezuela (but with a game in hand) and tied with Argentina on points, but behind on goal differential. Colombia is also equal on points with Chile, but with a game in hand as well. Las Cafeteras have the potential to create separation at the top of the table during this window as they will face all three teams. The top two Nations League teams will directly qualify to the World Cup, while the next two will go to the intercontinental playoff for a last chance to secure a tournament spot.

Santos was one of the SheBelieves Cup’s iron women. She played every minute of all three games for Las Cafeteras, finishing with a goal and an assist. Santos served as the Colombian captain in their match against Canada.

With the CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations delayed until July, the Ivory Coast will take part in the 2026 FIFA Series in Ivory Coast’s capital Abidjan.  Les Éléphants will face off against Mauritania, Turks and Caicos, and Pakistan during the window. During the last international window Kouassi started Ivory Coast’s match against Benin and entered as a substitute against Kenya.

Sofia Cantore and Lucia Di Guglielmo (Italy)

Le Azzurre’s first window of World Cup qualifying did not get off to a strong start. Against Sweden in their first match, Italy allowed just one Swedish shot on target. Unfortunately for Le Azzure, that shot beat Italian goalkeeper Laura Guiliani and was the only goal either team managed on the day. In their match against Denmark, Martina Piemonte put Italy into the lead in the 19th minute. Le Azzurre were unable to hold the lead and conceded a goal in the second half. Neither team was able to find a winner and the match ended in a 1-1 draw.  Entering the second qualifying window, Italy sit third in their group, three points behind both Denmark and Sweden. This international window provides Italy with an opportunity to make up ground on the teams ahead of them. On the first matchday, Italy will face off against fourth place Serbia while Denmark will face Sweden. Italy will have an opportunity to improve on their draw against Denmark when the teams square off in the rematch.

Sofia Cantore and Lucia Di Guglielmo both started the match against Sweden. Cantore played 62 minutes before making way for Maria Piemonte She had one of Italy’s two shots on goal for the day. Di Guglielmo went the full 90 minutes and had one of Italy’s five yellow cards. Neither player featured in Le Azzurre’s match against Denmark. Di Guglielmo was an unused sub, while Cantore was not on the bench for the day.

Trinity Rodman (US)

Coming off their sweep of Argentina, Canada, and Colombia and eighth SheBelieves Cup title, the USWNT scheduled a tough trio of matches against the Japanese WNT. Nadeshiko comes to the US at an interesting time for team. Just a few weeks ago, Japan won their third AFC Women’s Asian Cup in a dominant performance. Over the course of the tournament, Nadeshiko defeated Chinese Taipei, Vietnam, India, Philippines, South Korea, and Australia, outscoring their opponents 29-1. Following the tournament, however, the Women’s National Team and their coach Nils Nielson parted ways. Former Japanese U-20 coach Michihisa Kano will manage the team for the upcoming three matches.

Rodman’s three appearances in last month’s SheBelieves Cup allowed her to surpass the half century mark for the USWNT. In 52 appearances for country, Rodman has 13 goals and nine assists. Rodman appeared in all three SheBelieves Cup matches, coming off the bench for the final 28 minutes against Argentina and starting against Canada and Colombia. In total, she played 158 minutes in the three matches. In five USWNT appearances so far in 2026, Rodman has played 247 minutes and scored two goals.

Esme Morgan (England)

The Lionesses started their World Cup qualifying with a 6-1 win over Ukraine and a 2-0 victory over Iceland. The second match window will be substantially more difficult. The Lionesses will face FIFA’s top ranked team and the team they have faced in three successive tournament finals, Spain. Adding an extra layer of intrigue to the proceedings, England’s captain and Morgan’s sometimes partner in at the center of the Lionesses’ defense could potentially in doubt for the game. After that heavyweight bout, England will travel to Iceland for the second half of their matchup with Stelpurnar okkar.

In last month’s international window, Morgan started on the bench against Ukraine. She entered at half for Leah Williamson. Against Iceland, Morgan played the full 90 at the center of the Lioness backline.

El Tri have cruised through Concacaf W qualifying thus far. Through two games, Mexico have outscored their opponents 21 to 0. They sit in second place in their group, but only because Puerto Rico have swept their three matches and scored 26 goals in the process. This window El Tri will face third place the U.S. Virgin Islands and first place Puerto Rico.

Bernal featured in both matches for Mexico in the last international window. Against Saint Lucia, Bernal started and played the first half in the Concacaf W qualifier at Saint Lucia. She scored one of Mexico’s seven goals in the victory. In the friendly against Brazil, Bernal served as Mexico’s captain and played the full 90 minutes.

Sandy MacIver (Scotland)

Scotland are in League B for UEFA World Cup qualifying and will face a more arduous path to Brazil. Winning or at least finishing a close second in their group could ease the difficulty a small degree. Scotland’s first two qualifying matches against Luxembourg got them off on the right foot. Scotland won both matches by a combined 12-0 score. This breaks matches will go a long way toward determining who will win the group, as they will face second place Belgium in a home and away match up. The Belgian Red Flames sit in second by virtue of goal differential, having outscored Israel 8-0 over their two game tilt.

MacIver was in goal for both Scotland games. She kept a clean sheet in both matches and was only called on to make one save total.

Upcoming Matches

Anguilla, Les Grenadiers’ first opponent, are second to last in the group with a -10 goal differential. Haiti’s final match in the window against the Dominican Republic will determine who wins the group and advances to the tournament’s next stage and continue on in Olympic and World Cup qualification.
