MacIver Fights for World Cup Dream, FIFA Disappoints, and More: Wednesday Freedom Kicks
Hello, readers! Looks like the melting process is officially underway, and thank goodness- let’s just say, the snow was not playable at this point. Let’s hit the news offerings, shall we?
The Spirit have a glut of goalkeepers on the roster, but Sandy MacIver is pretty clearly second best only to Aubrey Kingsbury. She’s going to play in World Cup Qualifiers, and we wish her the best competing for her nation’s hopes of making the next tournament.
Pines opens up at length about his experience so far playing in Austria. Glad he’s found a place he feels valued, may it continue to be a good place for him to play.
So you didn’t get 2026 World Cup tickets in FIFA’s lottery. What now? The Athletic
Ugh for those who were left out in the cold.
USMNT defender Noahkai Banks: ‘No thought’ of Germany switch despite contact– USA Today
This is an interesting one. A highly promising 19 year old CB playing for Augsburg has gotten a call from the German federation. Though Banks was born in Hawaii, he has lived and played in Germany for the vast majority of his life, and is eligible for a cap. A Germany callup for players like these usually has a similar outcome- they enter the pool, and only if the requisite caps and strictures are not achieved do they sometimes relent and return to the USMNT pool. It appears that Noahkai, however, is perfectly fine for now playing and seeing where the next cycle leads. He’s spoken highly of his time with friends in the US Youth camps. Auspicious signs for US Soccer recruitment, perhaps.
USMNT defender Alex Freeman makes Villarreal debut in lopsided win over Espanyol– Goal.com
Alex Freeman was blooded as a substitute. Let’s see how his La Liga journey develops.
Good for the team.
USMNT could lose coach Pochettino after 2026 World Cup as Premier League giants emerge as potential destination– World Soccer Talk
I’m sure Poch is pleasantly surprised that he’s being talked about in this way. Why, he’s been so focused on his role within US Soccer, that he’s barely had time to openly talk about his desire to manage in the EPL on more than one occasion to the press. But yeah, Tim Weah criticizing the ticket pricing for this summer, that’s the problem…
UWCL playoff round preview: Can Arsenal maintain winning momentum?– ESPN
An extensive breakdown of the UWCL matches taking place today and tomorrow, as the Round of 16 knockout games begin.
Inter Miami MLS’ most valuable team; 5 teams worth over $1B – report– ESPN
Valuations are in for MLS franchises. It’s true that a foothold in an American city is nothing to sneeze at, and the absence of promotion and relegation creates a stable investment package that new ownership groups can count on. It is definitely an open question who, or how many, are able to pay these purchasing fees. Not that many sovereign wealth funds out there that would go in for something like this.
An MLS club steps up pursuit of Robert Lewandowski!– Yahoo
Chicago Fire are apparently doing all they can to bring one of the most storied goal scorers in the history of the Champions League to The Windy City. To land him, they’ll have to make it a lucrative package, and possibly prevent Robert from googling them.
MLS jersey Power Rankings: Who’s the best dressed in 2026?– ESPN
And, to close out, a veritable smorgasbord for your eyes, as ESPN delves into some MLS jerseys. Do you agree with their rankings?
That’s all I’ve got. One-up me in the comments, and have a great sporting day!

Thomas Frank sacked at Spurs

Personally, I think they should have stuck with him, but perhaps the personalities simply didn’t fit.
I didn’t realize that Pines had moved to Austria. Hope he continues to do well.
DC’s 2026 Home Jersey has been officially revealed:
As stated in the DW2 post. I kind of like it. It’s clean with some interesting details. It might find it’s way to hug my AARP bod. My last purchase was the cherry blossom bomb jersy.
I like this round of MLS shirts in general. The NE shirt reminded me of a fireworks explosion for the 250th, rather than a starburst. (starburst is candy). Either way, NE killed it.
Doyle was fired by MLS. I guess you could say “laid off,” “canned,” “made redundant” or whatever other euphemism you want. Regardless of the top-end expenditures and team values, the league has made so many small time moves that scream “we’re very cheap and maybe in trouble?” Seriously, what happens after Messi retires and the Apple money stops?
Once they started dipping their toes into AI match recaps, the writing seemed to be on the wall for this, sadly.
What do you mean, what happens?! The sun will never set on the NASL! The NY Cosmos will last a thousand years!
Lewandowski in Chicago (home to one of the largest population of Poles outside of Poland) would be pretty ideal for everyone involved.
DC lineup for pre-season game against Minnesota (in numerical order):
Kurokawa, Peglow, Stroud, Baribo, Nealis, Tubbs, Servania, Markovic, Clark, Kijima, Bono
Link to stream:
Per Capital City Soccer Show (who is at the game) the actual formation is:
Bono; Kurokawa, Markovic, Nealis, Tubbs (RB); Kijima, Stroud (CM), Servania, Clark; Peglow Baribo
Can an MLS team make the playoffs with all 0-0 draws for points?
Asking for a friend
There’s certainly a higher chance of that happening than making it while losing most of your games 6-0
Oh, certainly
But I’ve had the game on muted since the 8th minute
Out of possession shape is strong
Feng Shui toward goal? Nonexistent
So last year a 34 points would have been good enough for 12th in the East. Not playoff worthy but still 8 points better than their actual finish.
Halftime 0-0. A couple decent chances going both ways. Markovic almost gave up an own-goal, but has otherwise looked ok. Tubbs has been doing better at RB that I would have thought. The formation can switch into more of a 3-5-2 as well, with Kurokawa pushing up (which he does a lot of regardless)
Reports that the Spirit are trading Croix Bethune to Kansas City. She apparently requested the trade
I don’t like any part of that.
Per Goff, Spirit receive $100k in allocation funds and $900k in Transfer Threshold Funds.
Argh! If they trade anyone, it needs to be an international player. Not sure why she’d request this trade (if that rumor is true).
Per Goff:
Spirit President of Soccer Operations Haley Carter says the trade came “after conversations about her desire to explore development opportunities in a different environment.”
So, that seems like it was player driven
Not sure how to translate that. Money? Desire to be the main character? Disagreement with Gonzalez about her role with the team?
We have a lot of talent and have gotten on quite well without her and/or Rodman at times, but this doesn’t get us closer to winning the championship again.
I know most of you aren’t interested in rugby, but something huge has happened for pro rugby here in the US today. The first ever CBA was announced between Major League Rugby (MLR) and US Pro Rugby Players Association (USPRA).
