USMNT Thumps Uruguay in Friendly, African Duo Take Centerstage for Spirit Final, Curacao make World Cup History, and More: Wednesday Freedom Kicks
Wow, the past 24 hours has been bursting with news. Chalk full of news. All of it soccer related. All of it soccer related? Anyway, there’s plenty to cover, so let’s get into it.
Statement Uruguay win shows the USMNT has come a long way in 16 months– ESPN
5-1. 4 goals in the first half. If you didn’t manage to see this game, definitely find a highlight package, cuz lordy, this was a blowout.
USMNT Player Ratings vs. Uruguay: Pochettino’s Gamble Yields Best Performance Ever– Sports Illustrated
These ratings are quite high overall, but in fairness, a lot of MLS products balled out last night. Uruguay, for their part, needed a bicycle kick consolation prize toward the end of the first half just to prove they have quality. It was a low energy, almost listless first half performance from Uruguay, who looked old, slow, and lame, three words not generally associated with Marcelo Bielsa’s coaching style. Add a fourth word, malicious, cuz the number of ankle stomps was crazy. There was also a red card for Betancourt when the Spurs midfielder appeared to intentionally let his foot ride over the ball to attempt to injure Sebastian Berhalter, who had a defining performance for the US. And Sebastian wasn’t the only MLS product to impress.
Washington Spirit aim for redemption in second straight NWSL championship appearance– WUSA9
Nobody forget that The Washington Spirit are traveling to San Jose (reportedly on a private jet) to take part and hopefully claim the NWSL playoff crown this Saturday at 8 PM. It’s a big one.
The gist of the headline doesn’t really capture the intriguing nature of the impressive partnership between Rose Kouassi and Gift Monday, who have carried their connection from the regular season into the postseason with not one but two opening goals back to back in knockout games. One detail I was particularly interested in, is that there’s a bit of a language barrier between the two. Doesn’t stop the very potent bond they have created.
NWSL GM survey: Salary cap bad? USWNT relations, rule-breakers, more– ESPN
The concerning debate that Alyssa Thompson’s departure sparked within NWSL circles is now fully en fuego now that the league seems unable or unwilling to retain global sporting icon, Trinity Rodman. This article probed the GMs of NWSL for their views, anonymously, on the salary cap situation. Their overall response is pretty clear.
Esme Morgan’s growth this season has not gone unnoticed by her national team coach.
Curacao become smallest-ever nation to qualify for World Cup– ESPN
With three CONCACAF powerhouses hosting and thus exempt from qualification, as well as a greatly expanded number of spots available in the World Cup next year, there was always the potential for some underdog appearances from our region. But a Caribbean country of 156,000 qualifying is remarkable. Read on to find out more about how the smallest nation ever to qualify made it happen.
Loudoun United begins search for new head coach after mutually parting ways with Ryan Martin– Loudoun Times Mirror
The silly, unjust decision made earlier in the season by Loudoun United’s ownership group to jettison long time stalwart and effective managerial steward Ryan Martin has reached its culmination point. Martin has already secured a new position as The Oakland Roots manager, another USL club. Seriously, owners, whatcha doing?
MLS owners formally begin succession planning for Don Garber, other execs– Sports Business Journal
Head-turning news for the future of MLS. Ranks this low on the list cuz it’s very much still in the beginning phases of development, and there will be more substantial reporting down the line, but still incredibly noteworthy.
MLS executive who built a powerhouse faced allegations of sexist, racist and homophobic behavior– The Guardian
Lots of yeesh in this one.
D.C. United pursuing partnership with the District for Audi Field roof– Washington Business Journal
There’s progress, and then there’s whatever this continued noise is.
Extortionate tickets and matches moved at Trump’s whim: are you ready for the ‘greatest World Cup ever’?– The Guardian
I’m not gonna end on a high note.
That’s all I’ve got! One-up me in the comments, and have a great sporting day!

Its behind a paywall that I don’t have subscription for, but its about getting a roof at Buzzard Point and showed up in my Google news feed.
https://www.bizjournals.com/washington/news/2025/11/18/audi-field-roof-dc-united-jason-levien.html
…. It’s in the fks already?
Whoops missed it and I posted it in the comments last night.
Would love to have someone summarize it, if they have access. Seems fanciful. Also pointless. If an event requires an arena with a roof, there’s one at Gallery Place. If it needs to take place on grass, why do a roof?
Atlanta declined Brooks Lennon’s option. He and Aaron Herrera have pretty similar profiles, so while I would really like Brooks Lennon on our team, getting him seems pretty unlikely (unless the team somehow moves Aaron Herrera out of nowhere).
Have you met our ownership?
Could definitely see the pair saying “Brooks Lennon? Too rich for my blood!”
It’s likely the only way we would have acquired him was in the hypothetical scenario of Lennon playing well against us late in the season, and Weiler liking the cut of his jib.
I think he’s actually making slightly less than Herrera. Although he’ll be entering free agency, so he might see a substantial bump.
Let’s just remember though that ownership spent $400,000 in GAM to get Hosei Kijima, and spent $700,000 of their own money to get Caden Clark. They’re not necessarily huge spenders, but they will spend. It just has yet to be shown that they can spend wisely.
Yeah, I was joking about the owner’s cheapness, not Lennon’s salary
Something like moving Herrera on could happen. It depends on the coaches. Remember Renee said, “the table does not lie.”. With a new CSO/Agent Sogut, they could be getting rid of a lot of people and starting again with trades. I am guessing trading for different players will be big in the mix of changes. But it will be hard getting trades based on this past season’s performance.
Herrera is one of the names I expect to get calls for, likely from a team higher in the table that’s looking for that missing piece to win some silverware. Hopefully not for the same kind of haul we traded Klich for.
It is quite bizarre how willing they are to shell out huge wads of cash pretty regularly, but only in depreciating assets and not on anything that can make them lots of money later on. Like, Audi is going to be a burden in less than 20 years time. Benteke and Rooney temporarily put butts in seats but doubtful they make their transfer fee or salary back in just that and tshirt sales. Selling a moderately successful academy kid probably pays for a year of operations somewhere in the organization, with more coming if they keep doing well.
The team posted a nice little off-season interview with Peltola:
https://www.dcunited.com/news/offseason-files-catching-up-with-midfielder-matti-peltola
The team also dropped a video of an intersection as a teaser for something happening tomorrow. No idea what, but I’m prepared to be underwhelmed.
WashPost dropped a nice article on Scotland’s win over Denmark in Glasgow. It comes with clips of golazzos that are worth a view. (I am biased)
No the bicycle kick was quite the golazzo.
He (McTominay) made it look easy. Haggis-fed, he is!
You’re not seeing things. Very good goals, two of them sensational.
It’s also worth trawling YouTube for Scottish fans reactions, cuz they’re life affirming.
I saw dudes I played with on the feeds, crazy! They are still, uh, enjoying water….(right)….
Tara McKeown was named NWSL Defender of the Year. I don’t follow the Spirit super closely, but congratulations to her! I was a little surprised that she was the only Spirit representative in the Best XI, and even more surprised that Croix Bethune was the only Spirit in the second team Best XI.
Availability was awarded, for sure. I genuinely think Tara is the strongest and most versatile defender in the league with Girma’s departure, but her ability to stay healthy gave her an edge that most of the Spirit stars simply didn’t have
She is outstanding
On DCU United and WCQ news — Aaron Herrera’s weak, slow defending allowed the cross which resulted in the stoppage time own goal which gave Suriname a lifeline into the playoff, over Honduras. Of course, that might not even have been a consequential goal had Andy Najar scored, nearly putting Honduras through with a really nice shot at the end of the 1st half vs. Panama, a shot that Keylor Navas somehow got his hand on to direct wide.
And, DCU legend Erick Davis scored the penalty kick to put Panama up 2-0 and secure their spot in next summer’s tourney.
Suriname, Curacao, go Dutch colonialism!!!!!
(I still absolutely dug the Suriname players partying with “revelers outside their hotel at 3 AM last month, Panama, I think…
