Friday, yet again! It’s been a weird week for me with work and going to Audi Field for mid-week soccer, but I’m looking forward to a relaxing weekend.

Can Wayne Rooney rebuild D.C. United? (Washingtonian)
Interesting interview with and profile of Rooney, covering his time as a player and in the English tabloids and his transition to coaching. He’s surprisingly (to me at least) candid about his Premier League aspirations.

MLS player removed from team activities amid gambling investigation (Washington Post)
Max Alves of the Colorado Rapids allegedly took $12,000 to get a yellow card in a match against LA Galaxy last year. He was shown the card just 90 minutes (edit: seconds!) after being subbed into the game. Pretty bold stuff.

We also have some news about the USWNT’s planned preparation for the World Cup, which kicks off in less than 70 days!

It was a bit of a light news day, so here’s a video of Washington Spirit’s 15-year-old midfielder Chloe Ricketts being star-struck by Brazilian legend Marta after Wednesday’s game.

Have a good weekend! Enjoy the nice weather and the soccer!

“He was shown the card just 90 minutes after being subbed into the game. Pretty bold stuff.” 90 minutes doesn’t seem so bad? 🙂

Will Nelson

90 minutes after being subbed in…? Maybe it was meant to be 90 seconds?

Dave20194

Yes, the linked WaPo story says 90 seconds.

You were just testing to see if we read the details. I’d say he’s hosed–will never play another match in MLS.

I am glad that our sporting press doesn’t treat star pro athletes like the British tabloids. They made an entire fictional character out of Wayne Rooney and still try to peddle their narrative of him rather than bothering to look at what he actually does. He has been nothing but class and humble and professional with DC United.

To make it even worse, they made up this fictional character of him when he was a teenager. He did normal teenage boy silly stuff except he was talented enough to do it on a major league soccer field. He grew into a thoughtful man, as is normal. He is clearly a very dependable and caring professional, despite what those stupid tabloids say.

David Rusk

Amen to your observations , Cavan. On the other hand, the British tabloids did give us “Wagatha Christie”, which is one of the great puns of all time.

BTW, in our Airbnb cottage 30 miles from Lynchburg, I am reading “The ABC Murders,” my first Agatha Christie murder mystery ever.

David, consider two things while you are there:

1) Popular Forest (Jefferson’s retreat, and do a websearch recent WashPost article about the incredible craftsman that rendered it so amazing)

2) D-Day memorial in Bedford

Oh, and also consider having:

3) A wonderful and relaxing time

David Rusk

Thanks for the suggestions, Doc. With my son, his wife, and granddaughter’s fiancé along, our plate is pretty full already.

The Bedford Memorial must be very moving. A whole Higgins boat of Bedford infantrymen wiped out in one-two minutes on D-Day. What a tragedy! It did help spur an army policy thereafter of not having all recruits in the same unit.

Samake has been called up to DC in exchange for Sargis going down to Loudoun. Aside from that Open Cup red card, Samake seemed to have been playing well for Loudoun this year. DC could use the depth at the wings as well.

JoeW

And Sargis would benefit from more minutes. And while Birnbaum is out, with Pine deserving to start, Hines-Ike back in the picture, and Williams healthy, Sargis isn’t going to get much PT.

JoeW

Very cool video clip of Chloe Ricketts.
