The NWSL is on a short break this week, but you may still have the opportunity to see some of your favorite Washington Spirit players in action as they join their respective National Teams in friendly matches to prepare for the upcoming 2023 World Cup.

Seven Spirit players have been named to national team rosters in this FIFA window. As has become common over the last two years, forwards Trinity Rodman and Ashley Hatch and midfielders Andi Sullivan and Ashley Sanchez will join the United States Women’s National Team. They will face Spirit teammate Marissa Sheva, who joins the Republic of Ireland as they prepare for their first ever World Cup appearance, in a series of two friendlies. Sheva plays as a midfielder for the Spirit, but has been named as a forward on Ireland’s roster.

Defender Gabrielle Carle and the rest of the Canada Women’s National Team will take on France, in that nation’s first appearance under new coach Hervé Renard. Carle was previously part of Canada’s 2019 World Cup squad and won a Gold Medal with the team in the 2020 Olympics.

Rounding out the group is rookie midfielder Riley Tanner, who will join Panama for their games against the Dominican Republic this evening and on Sunday. Like the Republic of Ireland, Panama will be making their World Cup debut this year, while the Dominican Republic did not qualify.
