NYCFC vs. D.C. United: Preview, time, and how to watch
D.C. United takes the battle to the Bronx tonight as they meet with NYCFC for the first time in 2023. While the teams’ last match took place across the river in New Jersey at Red Bull Arena, the Black-and-Red have never won a match at Yankee Stadium.
Could tonight be a first?
Our own Adam Taylor spoke directly with NYCFC communications to share his perspective on tonight’s matchup, and we couldn’t agree more.
NYCFC is on a home winning streak, riding high on five consecutive home wins. They’ve won 14 of their last 20 home matches in all competitions. Nick Cushing has a full-strength squad to choose from for this evening’s match, unlike Wayne Rooney, who has four important players sidelined with injuries.
Cushing recognizes the threat D.C. poses, though. He said, “We want to make sure we’re really aware of the areas where we can use our strengths. I’ve watched all of D.C.’s games, and they’ve carried the ball for the majority of those games. Against Columbus, they had more of the ball. Against Toronto, they had more of the ball, and against Orlando, they had more of the ball. They’re a really good team, and they’ve really improved from last year. They’ve added some real experience and for us, it’s about making sure that we know where they can be strong and where we can be strong.”
D.C. United head coach Wayne Rooney accepts no excuses, about the field or otherwise. He said, “We’re going to go there and play the team and there’s no excuses from us. If we don’t play well. We don’t win the game, and we’re certainly not gonna make an excuse of the field.”
Of D.C.’s recent performance, he said, “It’s been a frustrating time. as well first because I think the Orlando game for sure we should have won the game. For the Columbus game, there was some very good moments in that game. The frustrating thing for me is the goals we’ve conceded were avoidable. And on the flip side of that, we’ve created chances, and we have to do better then in the final play. We have to make sure we reward ourselves. Especially when we have good play in scoring goals, and obviously, that helps you win games.”
Check out everything Rooney had to say:
Key Player: Christian Benteke
We would argue that, as of late, no Benteke, no party. He is key to D.C.’s play. His ability to sneak into dangerous spots in the box and contribute to the Black-and-Red’s buildup makes him a standout.
Watch Out For: Matí Pellegrini
NYCFC’s whole attack is dangerous. Let’s get that one out of the way. Pellegrini can move play for NYCFC as he demonstrated against Inter Miami and be dangerous on goal. He should have put one in the back of the net last week, and we’re hoping he doesn’t find his goal against D.C. United.
Challenges: Yankee Stadium. The Black-and-Red haven’t been able to pull off a win in the Bronx. Ever.
Previously: D.C. United took all three points last August, winning 2-1 over NYCFC at Red Bull Arena. This was the first time the Black-and-Red had notched a road win against NYCFC (and we’re hoping it happens again). However, D.C. should keep on its toes. NYCFC has won four of the last six meetings.

Matt Doyle made a good point about this game. NYCFC uses high pressure on the backline. And DCU’s backline has been shaky with possession. We could see some serious errors here under pressure.
I’m not sure I agree with Doyle’s claim there. DC have been pretty good in possession. Especially last game. I feel like it’s just an easy thing to say. I think they’ve been shakier at actually defending than in possession.
The dimensions of their field at Yankee Stadium are smaller than say, Audi Field. is that right?
Humorlessly so.
Massively so.
Claudia Pagan reported that DC is trotting out the same lineup from last game except for Robertha coming in for Santos. I like that lineup, although Robertha’s speed is a moot point on that stupidly small field. He and Benteke seemed to have some good chemistry building. VAMOS!
With the shorter field, I think we might finally find out if the sweeper keeper tactic is smart, especially against a quality team. I imagine several NYCFC players can ping it from a short half field. We’re going to find out a lot today, with the caveat that Yankee Stadium is a postage stamp.
Good grief, 3 games on 3 different screens. DCU game on laptop. Old Glory DC game on my phone, and the USA vs Venezuela World Baseball Classic Quarterfinal game on the tv.
DCU under pressure early.
I know I joked about it above, but I truly forgot what a pool table this stadium is.
Oof, very early yellow for Canouse for an obvious hold.
Our short passing game has been subpar, and this is a tiny ass field
Think this offside goal is gonna stand
Unfortunately. 😬
Frustrating goal. NYC we’re trying that switch the entire first 15 minutes. This time it works. Not enough help on the week side of a short field.
Seriously have felt like it was only a matter of time before this goal happened. What do you all think? Do we tighten this up? Or… not? 😬
NYC just knows how to manipulate teams on this field. It’s frustrating to watch. Might need another Durkin golazo.
Frustrating tactical game, in that NYCFC are basically just congesting their own end, and it’s a very short jog to a counterattack. To his credit, Klich looks like he can play in this short space with his touch and passing, no one else looks particularly comfortable
Anyone else feel like we brought a bunch of large field runners to a futsal game?
Defensivley we are way to narrow and on this field that is really odd to see. NYCFC have had no issues finding space behind and on the wings.
I think Rooney might have wanted to continue the tactic of forcing the opposition wide, but agreed that it doesn’t make a to of sense on this field
Update on other games going well.
Well Old Glory is up 10-3 on Tornto coming into the 2nd half. USA 3 – Venezuela 2 bottom of the 3rd. Venezuela has a man on 1st and no outs.
This is just going to get uglier and uglier.
Missed foul to a goal. Color me shocked
DCU has to find a way to break quickly. That’s the only way we’re going to get good chances at goal tonight.
Fuck. Seems like we were finally adjusting to the field somewhat, but NYCFC was born in tiny, molded by it. They did not know what a real field was till they were men…
Ouch. Some really basic stuff DC needs to work on in terms of defending.
Nice job by Ruan keeping Rodriguez onside… and doing a sh***y job of following Magno for good measure.
Miller was also horribly out of place in the goal on the shot. Hamid would’ve done much better
We seem thoroughly out of this game, maybe we just throw on some youngsters… except then we’re likely just teaching them what a shellacking feels like. This is always a tough fixture, hard to say what the best tactic is from here.
*Vince McMahon strut gif*
Oi wats goin on lads
Really hope Jeahze settles in over time. Been shaky to start the season.
I find it interesting that the announcers talked about NYCFC’s defensive record last season. Half their games at home with a tiny field that is of course easier to defend because they are used to it’s confines. I want to see their defensive record when they don’t have this ridiculous home field advantage.
Good news: 45 more minutes and DC doesn’t have to play on this field for the rest of the year!
Tough one. NYCFC are certainly more used to the space, but honestly, they’re also a lot more competent with their decision making and touch all over the lineup. We can talk all we want about “winning now,” but this club I would argue is way closer in its needs to a rebuild. Whether it’s great to admit, we’re living in limbo in terms of what we’re trying to do.
This may be just me, but DC has looked much more competent on normal sized fields. I’ve usually gone into this game just hoping for a tie historically.
We would definitely look better on a larger field, it’s still depressing to see the lack of quality and the fact we’re very likely overpaying for pieces like Jeahze. I’m basically saying that you have to build over time to be a top club in this league at this point, don’t think “win now” was ever realistic
NYCFC are having a walk in the park. Small mistakes with big repercussions.
What should change for the next 45’?
Remember how to play soccer? Kidding aside, go more direct and attack quickly. Building up patiently isn’t working. Both of NYCFC’s goals came off rapid ball movement with excellent off the ball running. We’re going to have to catch NYCFC in transition if we’re going to have a chance at scoring.
We’re also going to have to prevent them from capitalizing or getting a corner every counter attack, hard to transition if we can’t blunt their effectiveness
3 Subs to start the 2nd half: Pedro Santos (Robertha), Victor Palsson (Canouse), and Jacob Greene (Ruan).
Benteke!
We’ll that was fast!
Oh, wow, NYCFC caught napping on the wing, cross finds Benteke for an open header!
Klich with the assist, well done!
Softest yellow I’ve seen in my life given to Palsson. NYC players spend a whole lot of time on the ground.
Yeah, earlier I was going to give credit to the ref for ignoring the flops generally, that was bad
So apparently this is another game so far where only DCU players can be carded.
Uh-oh looks like Jeahze is hurt.
IMMEDIATE RESPONSE! That’s what we like to see. This is the goal Benteke’s been holding on to, and we’ll take it!
HANDS TO THE FACE RED!?!?!? HELLO!?!?
Right?!
I thought that was automatic, no??
Apparently it was judged not violent enough for a red thus a yellow. At least that’s my guess.
Not sure that Robertha was even figuring out how to play tonight. Happy with the changes.
Oh look Rodriguez hands to the face and gets a yellow.
Would imagine (hope?) if Greene does remotely decently and stays healthy he’s backup right back for longer than expected
Forget when Rooney might have said to motivate DC, what did Cushing say to his players?! Very bad approach from the home team, taking it for granted
Jeahze needs a sub. Problem is DC has no more left back aside from Williams.
Maybe sub out Jeahze for Fletcher, make Santos the left back?
Well, looks like Akinmboni is going to push Williams wide
Pellegrini is an incredibly floppy player, could have gotten double yellows already
This Darth Garber will not allow as NYCFC is one of the League’s “Golden” Boy teams
Seriously, NYCFC have lost their shit, this has been an atrocious team effort in the second half, from the early chance for Benteke that he converted to now. We’re definitely motivated and playing better, but NY are simply forgetting everything they did to dominate in the first
KDP saving DCU’s bacon in transition with a perfectly timed tackle getting all ball.
OGDC beats Toronto 29-3 with a dominant second half making Toronto pay for 2 yellow cards.
And it looks like the US pitching is collapsing here in the bottom of the 5th. Venezuela has already scored 3 times and has runners on 2nd and 3rd with only 1 out. Make that 2 on a sac fly….6-5 Venezuela…
Santos is down again. DCU players just picking up injuries left right and center here.
Either Pedro Santos has not been at all durable since coming in, or he’s buying us a LOT of stoppage time, and I definitely cannot tell which is reality.
Oof, looks like he’s legit done, probably for a while
Hey look Rodriguez with hands to what looks like the neck again…that should be a second yellow no? Or are they judging that it was on the shoulder?
Either I’m mad, or NYC are absolutely begging us to tie this up
No it looks like they are going to bunker starting pretty high up the field to try and hit in transition with a dagger.
I’m just seeing sloppy, personally, they bunkered and countered more in the first
I’m hopeful!
