International Round Up: DC Power and Spirit International Players
The past week was chock full of soccer featuring DC Power and Washington Spirit players on international duty. In total, 11 players from the Spirit or Power took the field. Let’s take a look at how they did.
Rebeca Bernal (Mexico)
Mexico resumed their Concacaf W Championship (and 2027 World Cup) qualifying campaign against Saint Lucia in Gros Islet. Overall, the match was a comfortable affair for El Tri. Mexico reached half with a 2-0 lead and then turned up the pressure, scoring four more goals and forcing an Ellaisa Marquis own goal on the way to a 7-0 victory. Mexico dominated possession, holding the ball for roughly 80% of the time. El Tri earned 20 corners, while Sant Lucia had none. Pachuca’s Charlyn Corral had a brace for Mexico and Alexia Delgado, Nicolette Hernández, and Diana Ordóñez each had a goal. El Tri sits atop Qualifying Group A with a 2-0-0 record. They are equal with Puerto Rico on wins (2) and points (6) but have a greater goal differential (+21 to +17). Mexico will resume Concacaf W qualifying play in April with matches against the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.

Lucia Di Guglielmo and Sofia Cantore (Italy)
Italy is also in League A, in a group with Sweden, Denmark, and Serbia. Le Azzure’s 1-0 loss to Sweden is best be described as suboptimal. Italy out possessed Sweden nearly 58% to 42% and attempted 11 shots over the course of the game, directing just two on frame and one off the post. Rough would be another useful adjective as five Italian players received yellow cards during the game. The game’s lone goal, a 22nd minute shot by Filippa Angeldahl was one Italian keeper Laura Guiliani will watch on replay and want back. Italy currently sits in third in their group.
Lucia Di Guglielmo and Sofia Cantore both started the match. Di Guglielmo played the full 90 minutes on Italy’s back line, committed three fouls, earned a yellow, and took one shot. Cantore started up front for Italy and played 62 minutes. For stretches where Italy was having trouble hanging on to possession of the ball, Cantore looked the most capable of keeping it. She had one of the two Italian shots on net.

Melchie Dumornay sealed the match for Haiti with a converted penalty just before stoppage time. Following their 2-0 victory, Haiti sits top their group, two points clear of the Dominican Republic and Suriname.

Just bore the half, Constant attempted a back pass to Haitian goalkeeper Naila Louissaint. The pass didn’t connect and Constant and Louissaint scrambled to keep Suriname from recovering the ball and putting it in the empty net. The ball rolled for a Suriname corner that ultimately cause no harm.
Haiti scheduled only one match for the window. Les Grenadiers will resume Concacaf qualifying in April with matches against Anguilla and the Dominican Republic.

Once again Leicy Santos started and played the full match for Las Cafeteras. She had the assist on Caicedo’s game winning goal. Santos is one of three Spirit field players (Di Guglielmo and Rudd) to play a full game during this international window. She is the only one to go 90 twice, thus far.
