DC Power FC beats Brooklyn FC on the road in terrific display
DC Power FC returned to the win column today as they earned a 2-0 win on the road against Brooklyn FC. A 32nd minute goal by Alyssa Walker along with a 63rd minute goal by Loza Abera were the difference in this game.
DC Power had a few players away due to international duty, but still were able to put out a strong lineup in a match that was rescheduled up from mid-April due to Brooklyn FC having a stadium conflict. Goalkeeper Sara Wojdelko, who was acquired on loan from the Washington Spirit a couple of weeks ago, got her first start as Morgan Aquino was a last minute call-up to the Australian national team.
DC Power started off the match aggressively, with the team forcing Brooklyn’s defense to work early on. Loza Abera was able to get the team’s first great chance on goal with a shot in the sixth minute, but Kelsey Daugherty was able to get the save in the bottom corner.
Alyssa Walker had another terrific chance in the 22nd minute. Her shot hit the crossbar and stayed out to keep the score 0-0. However, DC Power continued to push the ball forward to earn some chances. It was only a few minutes later that they were able to capitalize.
In the 31st minute, DC Power got their goal. Alyssa Walker was able to earn a penalty after being fouled by Brooklyn’s Hope Breslin while inside the 18-yard box. Walker converted from the penalty spot to make it 1-0 to DC Power.
DC Power held a lot of the possession and really took it to Brooklyn, carrying the 1-0 lead into halftime. The start of the second half was a bit choppy in terms of play, but DC Power were able to settle in and continue to push the ball forward.
In the 63rd minute, that work paid off. Off a corner kick, the ball bounced around towards the top of the penalty area. Loza Abera got a good run up and put a shot through traffic into the back of the net to make it 2-0 to DC.
DC Power was able to control the tempo for the entire match, holding possession 58% of the time. They were able to withstand a couple of late flurries, but Brooklyn was not able to draw closer. After 4 minutes of stoppage time, the referee blew the whistle for full time and DC Power had the victory.
The win vaults DC Power into fifth place in the Gainbridge Super League standings, just one point underneath the playoff line. They also have a couple of games in hand on the teams ahead of them in the standings. DC Power extended their unbeaten streak to 5 matches with the victory, their second road victory in three matches this spring. Most importantly, they bring home a ton of momentum that they hope to carry into their spring home opener next Thursday night at Audi Field.
