Report: DC Power offers “significantly larger” contract to Trinity Rodman

The news has swirled around Trinity Rodman’s contract negotiations the past couple of weeks, and today an unlikely candidate entered the race. According to a report from The Athletic’s Meg Linehan and Tom Bogert, DC Power has offered Trinity Rodman a contract that is “significantly larger” than anything the Washington Spirit or any other NWSL team is able to offer under the current salary cap.

Trinity Rodman has a contract offer from DC Power of the Gainbridge Super League that is significantly larger than what the Spirit or NWSL is able to counter under the current salary cap limitations, according to sources who have been briefed on negotiations.

NWSL commissioner Jessica Berman, speaking at media day for the NWSL Championship this weekend between the Spirit and Gotham FC, said they are fighting to keep Rodman in the league. “As it relates to Trinity and candidly, any other top player in the world, we want those top players here in the NWSL,” Berman said, “and particularly we want Trinity in the NWSL, and we will fight for her. Our market has more interest in female athletes than any other league in the world.”

It’s an ambitious move for DC Power in the second season of the club and the USL Super League. The USL Super League doesn’t have a salary cap, which would allow teams to make a big splash by bringing in a player of Rodman’s stardom range. The push also would double in keeping Rodman in DC but would shake up the system by having her in the USL Super League, a first division league that so far is fighting for traction alongside the NWSL. Spokespeople with DC Power FC declined to comment when reached by The District Press earlier this evening.

It had been reported that contract negotiations between Rodman’s representation and the NWSL had reached Jessica Berman’s desk. Rodman has also received offers from at least three teams in the English Women’s Super League. However, Trinity and the rest of the team are focused in winning the NWSL Championship on Saturday and bringing the second title in four years back to DC. Then, the discussions will pick back up and we can all be on Trinity Watch.

This almost feels like an Onion headline. Can’t imagine Rodman would actually take this offer, but it could really start to shift the balance between the two clubs/leagues if she did.

I’d guess there’s a near zero chance she takes this offer, but it will certainly help her drive up the offers other teams give her. And serves my and my son’s theory that DC Power exists solely because our owners want a vehicle to annoy Kang. We mostly joked about that not really fully believing it, but man, this makes it seem like they are happy to have this vehicle to poke at her.
