I think something that annoys me about the year that Messi had in the league actually stems from last year — he got the MVP award last year, when there were other players in the league (Benteke, Evander, Etc.) that were much more deserving. So, anything he does now its just like “sure, whatever”, because he’ll just win MVP every year he’s here just because of who he is.
The league hitched their wagon to him. They will rig as many outcomes as they can to favor their imagery of their omniscience.
Agree on that sentiment re: last year and how it colors this year, and presumably the next few.
Another thing about that Guardian article is that it references some statistics…that start in 2013. I think Messi’s 2025 is likely the best MLS season ever. But using a stat that starts in 2013 is erasure of several fine seasons worth mentioning by Landycakes, GBS, Preki, Etcheverry, Moreno, and probably others I’m not remembering off the top of my head.
(obligatory old man note that those players also had to play uphill both ways, in the snow, yada yada)
Still looking forward to seeing the USWNT game on record, was out a lot of Sunday. Did end up at a bar in DC by the time Coffey scored expertly off a corner routine.
They looked good. I am also impressed with the incremental progress at Portugal. God for the game overall.
Good not God, oops
The wins and losses are nice but not a big deal for me with regard to the USWNT at this point. The larger issues that really stood out in my mind from the first game and they persisted somewhat (though to a lesser extent) in came two were: (1) when other sides (even if less talented) outnumber us in midfield we struggle. The midfield of LaValle, Heaps and Coffey in a 433 doesn’t do well against a side that decides to play with 4 there. We don’t adjust and LaValle and Heapsthend up in roles they’re not good at. Since other (better) sides will look at what Portugal did and then copy it, that means that the USWNT needs to be very comfortable playing something other than a 4-3-3. Or the makeup of our midfield needs to change. And (2) problem solving–especially in the final third. We were no good at this in the last WC. The first Portugal match we just let individuals try to come up with a spot of brilliance. Better this match (and Yohannes makes a big difference). But still, I see this as an issue.
Colorado has now parted ways with Chris Armas as head coach. You could assume had Colorado made the playoffs, Armas probably keeps his job. They missed the playoffs on a tie-breaker. Had they gotten a result against DC in May, they would have made the playoffs. So, in a roundabout way, this is now the 3rd time DC has gotten Chris Armas fired
At least we got three points, or something…..
It is incredible that morbid stats hit our posting board, but it is Halloween week…..
:^)
The Red Bulls fired Sandro Schwarz, and we beat them too. It wasn’t what cost them the playoffs, but… feels good anyway.
Nobody loses to DCU and gets away with it! Almost true…
