Spirit vs. Pride

The Washington Spirit return to Audi Field on Saturday, October 18, determined as ever but without one of their brightest stars. Trinity Rodman, the team’s electric attacking force, will miss the match with an MCL sprain, leaving a big hole up front and forcing the Spirit to rethink how they generate chances. It’s another test in a season that’s been anything but easy — a season defined by resilience, growth, and a belief that’s carried this group through every obstacle thrown their way.

Their opponent, the Orlando Pride, bring plenty of quality even as they deal with their own challenges. With star forward Barbra Banda sidelined for the season, veteran Marta remains the heartbeat of Orlando’s attack — still capable of turning a game with one moment of brilliance. For Washington, this one will come down to composure and confidence. They’ve proven time and again that when they trust their style and each other, they can go toe-to-toe with anyone in the league.

🌟 Key Player: Esme Morgan
The England international has quietly become one of the Spirit’s most reliable leaders. Calm on the ball and sharp in her positioning, Morgan sets the tone in defense and helps spark attacks from the back. Against an Orlando side that loves to move the ball quickly, her ability to read danger and keep the back line steady will be key.

👀 Watch Out For: Marta
Even without Banda, Marta’s influence can’t be overstated. The Pride captain still sees the game a step ahead, dictating tempo and finding pockets of space that others miss. Washington’s midfield and defense will have to stay locked in to keep her from pulling the strings.

🚨 Challenges
Washington Spirit: With Rodman sidelined, Washington will need creativity and patience in the final third. Expect them to lean on quick passing and movement off the ball to open space rather than relying on pure pace. Staying patient will be crucial — forcing the issue could play right into Orlando’s hands.

Orlando Pride: Without Banda’s speed and finishing, the Pride will need to be sharp and clinical with the chances they do create. Much will depend on the chemistry between Marta and the supporting midfielders to find a way through Washington’s organized defense.

Previously
The Spirit and Pride have built one of the league’s more intriguing rivalries — fast-paced, physical, and always close. Their last meeting came down to details, and this one figures to be no different. Both teams are shorthanded, both hungry, and both know that a single moment could swing everything.

Not the attendance I’d hoped for the last regular season home game (I’m sure the protests took some of the crowd away), but a decently rowdy Audi nonetheless.

2-1 up at the half, I said I wanted another, because Marta is still Marta, and now she’s come on at the half and promptly done Marta things.
