Washington Spirit Vs. San Diego Wave

The Washington Spirit return to Audi Field on Sunday, October 5th, with everything to play for and momentum on their side. A win over the San Diego Wave would clinch a home quarterfinal and cap off a strong end to the regular season. Confidence is soaring after last week’s 4–0 win over Houston, where the Spirit delivered one of their most complete performances of the year — full of energy, precision, and purpose.

San Diego, however, remain a dangerous opponent despite a six-match winless run. The Wave continue to dominate possession across the league, dictating rhythm and flow through patient buildup and technical control. With playoff positions on the line, expect a tense, tactical encounter where every detail matters.

🌟 Key Player: Trinity Rodman

Freshly named NWSL Player of the Month, Trinity Rodman has been electric down the stretch — driving the Spirit attack with speed, strength, and confidence. Her combination of grit and skill makes her nearly unplayable in one-on-one situations. Against San Diego’s compact back line, Rodman’s directness and ability to create something from nothing could be the X-factor that decides the match.

👀 Watch Out For: Kenza Dali & Delphine Cascarino

San Diego’s creative spark runs through their European connection. Kenza Dali, with her exceptional vision and passing range, dictates tempo in midfield and creates opportunities through clever positioning and line-breaking balls. Alongside her, Delphine Cascarino brings relentless pace and unpredictability on the wing, capable of beating defenders off the dribble or cutting inside to finish herself. Washington’s fullbacks will need to stay sharp and organized to limit their influence and deny them space to operate.

🚨 Challenges:

Washington Spirit:
Breaking down San Diego’s disciplined defensive shape will take patience and precision. The Wave are comfortable controlling the ball for long stretches, forcing opponents to chase and react. For Washington, disrupting that flow — and striking quickly through Rodman and Gift Monday in transition — will be key. The Spirit have found form at the right time; maintaining composure in possession and clinical finishing could seal the deal.

San Diego Wave:
Converting possession into real danger remains the Wave’s main challenge. Despite controlling tempo, they’ve struggled to turn dominance into goals in recent weeks. To challenge Washington, they’ll need faster link-up play and better support in and around the box.

Previously:

These two sides met earlier this season in San Diego, battling to a 0–0 draw in a game defined by midfield duels and standout goalkeeping from Aubrey Kingsbury. Washington holds a narrow edge in the all-time series (2–1–4), but five of the last six meetings have ended level. Both clubs remain unbeaten when scoring first this season — setting the stage for a cagey, momentum-driven match where the opening goal could prove decisive.

Abiodun has no business assisting in the first ten minutes at right back with her left foot on a cross… WTH

Already a couple things in that Abiodun has no business being able to do – keeping the ball in off Esme’s clearance up the sideline, that assist, and a couple of defensive recoveries. Certainly feels like she’s firing on all cylinders today

Might want to sub off Trin now for mitigation

Wouldn’t be the worst idea to take her off at the half; she’s already gotten a warning from the ref for dissent, and if she’s also carrying a niggle…

Every time the Morgan State marching band comes in for the halftime show, I’m very entertained, but I also wonder who in the front office is an alum, because it’s at least once a season, if not more often

That was a stone cold penalty in real time, no idea what the replay looked like, but I (and my whole section) absolutely thought that was a pen.

This ref seems really committed to making this relatively one side game a close call

Weird watching it on TV, cuz you literally couldn’t see Kouassi in the shade, and then it’s just dropping far post in the net.

She of course didn’t mean that, but I’m glad this ref can get fucked.
