Washington Spirit vs. Houston Dash
The Washington Spirit return to Audi Field today, with everything to play for and plenty of belief in their step. Despite a season tested by injuries and absences, the Spirit have found ways to climb, with Croix Bethune’s creativity and leadership setting the tone for a young squad determined to punch above its weight. Houston, though, won’t roll over easily. The Dash arrive with a reputation for being stubborn at the back and dangerous on the break, making them the kind of opponent that keeps you on your toes for the full 90 minutes.
For Washington, the goal is simple: control the tempo and let their quality shine through. “Anything can happen. It’s our responsibility to play and control the game,” said defender Kate Wiesner, summing up the team’s mindset heading into a decisive stretch. That responsibility includes handling Michelle Alozie’s blistering pace and Allysha Chapman’s perseverance, while leaning on home support to tilt the balance. In a season where every point feels bigger than the last, the team that mixes grit with a little boldness could walk away with the edge.
🌟 Key Player: Croix Bethune
The Spirit’s midfield engine has been the heartbeat of Washington’s play all season, driving the attack with energy and flair. Against Houston’s tight, disciplined setup, her vision and quick connections could be the key to cracking the Dash defense wide open.
👀 Watch Out For: Allysha Chapman & Michelle Alozie
Chapman’s grit and veteran savvy make her tough to beat in Houston’s backline, while Alozie’s speed and directness make her a constant attacking threat. She could test Washington throughout the game with her ability to stretch the field and isolate defenders.
🚨 Challenges:
Washington Spirit: Cracking Houston’s defense is going to take more than sheer pressure. The Dash are stubborn in their own half, happy to sit back, block lanes, and force opponents into low-percentage shots. For Washington, the key will be staying patient and adding that extra touch of quality near goal to turn possession into real chances.
Houston Dash: Turning defensive grit into attacking threat remains the big test. The Dash can frustrate opponents, but creating and finishing chances consistently has been another story. To trouble Washington, they’ll need more support around Michelle Alozie and sharper decision-making in the final third.
⏪ Previously:
Washington has had the edge in recent meetings, but Houston’s ability to stay organized and capitalize on transition moments has made them a tricky opponent. With both teams shorthanded, this matchup could come down to which side adapts quickest.

Fascinating that Mckeown is playing left back in order to make Sylla the CB. Certainly seems that is has more to do with Tara’s versatility than Sylla’s mastery of the CB position. Shame, though, Tara has been doing great things down the middle
What an insane goal for Monday
Monday clocks it in in the scramble, en fuego
Just another manic Monday.
Great sequence starting with Esme making a sharp long ground ball to find Rodman for the assist
I’m ok if we flip last night’s Audi scoreline here, but mostly, I am repeatedly struck by how different the stadium feels for DCU and Spirit games right now.
There are rumblings that, after the supporters groups stopped bringing in drums in protest of the ownership, the club provided free tickets to certain fans if they brought them. So, essentially scab fans.
The atmosphere is grim.
Yeah, I saw that. It’s not good. But I also just mean the feeling in the stands. I’m a STH to both, in roughly the same part of the stadium, and the levels of hope, cynicism, joy, patience, etc. are just so wildly different team to team. A weekend like this, with two home games so close together, just highlights it even more.
Oh, I’m sure, just illustrating your point. There’s no question the two clubs are in wildly different tiers, and the fans will reflect that
Well, damn. Too bad some of the frustrating ties earlier in the season couldn’t be more like this when Spirit dominated, but this is a good time of year to have it click
Somewhat side-eying the yard sign stands, handed out with the “Built for the Fight” yard signs after the game, on the crowded Navy Yard Metro platform, but I didn’t actually see anyone get impaled (accidentally or otherwise), so it’s probably fine.
Watching what I can of the Loudoun game. The yellow to Tampa’s Paul Marie in the 14′ should’ve been a red.
Depressing to see Bill Hamid playing to Tampa Bay and not DCU or LUFC.
Final. Spirit 4 Houston 0. Monday with fsstest hat trick in NWSL history. Cantore with a bit of back heel magic for fourth.
