World Cup 2026 mascots, Monumental conflict with streamers, and more: Friday Freedom Kicks
Happy Friday, everyone! Fall is finally here, and it seems to me that tournament soccer is coming with it. Lots of international news and analysis today, plus some fun predicting the NWSL playoff picture. Let’s get into it.
The USMNT’s World Cup record: Which confederations give them the most success? (SSFC)
Donald takes a look at the US Men’s National Team’s World Cup history and which confederations they tend to be strongest against. I guess we should be hoping for an all-Concacaf, AFC and CAF group?
Report: UEFA set to vote to suspend Israel over war in Gaza (ESPN)
It’s looking increasingly likely that Israel will be suspended from UEFA over their actions in Gaza, keeping their men’s team out of next year’s World Cup.
I’ll be honest: I kind of hate these. The design: Soulless, ugly. The concept: boring. I wasn’t crazy about La’eeb, but at least he was whimsical!
Soccer’s most stylish 2025-26 kits: The world’s best jerseys (ESPN)
Speaking of design, here’s something for the jersey-heads among us. Personally, I’m really into the floral print on Almería’s away kit.
With just five games to go before the NWSL playoffs are set, we’ve got a fun tool to play with to chart the Spirit’s path.
London City Lionesses’ New World-Class Training Centre Approved (LCL)
Michele Kang’s London City Lionesses are building a new training center, which I suspect will once again raise the question among Spirit fans: are we Mom’s least favorite?
Amid fan uproar, DC United ownership vows changes will make club competitive again (WTOP)
Kaplan and Levien make another stop on their press tour. Much of this is variations on the theme we’ve seen before, but they do say they’re trying to resign Christian Benteke to a long-term deal.
I don’t take sides in TV network vs. streaming provider battles (aren’t they just going to charge us more either way?), but for those of you who rely on Monumental for local sports viewing, some news about their contracts with Hulu and YouTubeTV.
Navy Yard-Ballpark Escalator Replacement (WMATA)
Those of you who take public transportation to Buzzard Point should be aware of upcoming work on the elevators at the west entrance to the Navy Yard Metro stop. Might want to get off at Waterfront to be safe.
Finally, we have this weekend’s matches. Just three matches, and they’re all at different times! So watchable.
| Teams | When | Where | Watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| D.C. United vs. Philadelphia Union | Sat., Sep. 27 at 7:30 p.m. | Washington, DC | Apple TV |
| Washington Spirit vs. Houston Dash | Sun., Sep. 28 at 1 p.m. | Washington, DC | Paramount+ |
| Loudoun United vs. Tampa Bay Rowdies | Sun., Sep. 28 at 5 p.m. | Leesburg, VA | ESPN+ |
And if you need some enticement to get out to Segra Field, this weekend’s Loudoun United game will feature a familiar face, albeit for the other side.

The Mundial Mascots have never been a big deal to me but yeah, you’d figure with 3 options, the odds were they’d get at least one of them right or attractive in some manner. Nope.
It feels like someone just threw a “Give me animal mascots for a soccer tournament in the US, Mexico, and Canada.” prompt into AI and went with the most generic option possible. The contrast with the city-specific posters is stark.
Harsh, guys! Remember the lamentable Mascot for the Atlanta Olympics? This could be worse….
Izzy! I was real young for those Olympics, so I have residual fondness for that mascot from that.
I always feel for the players when it becomes an open discussion whether their nation should
Be banned from World Cup participation for larger political and human rights violations by their country. By definition, they’re not personally involved in military violence nor the larger machinations by their government, training, preparing, and playing takes up their time and energy. There is a reason to punish nations in this way, but ultimately the squad is the most affected. Felt the same way about Iran when it was in doubt last time, those players even made a brave show of not singing their national anthem in the first group game. It’s tough to be in that situation.
Some of those jerseys are pretty slick. I particularly like the Bodo/Glimt, Ajax, and Bayern jerseys.
Agree that some look pretty good (especially Bodo/Glimt), but I feel like so many on that list just come across as boring
Seems like that is a sad reflection of where jersey designs are these days. Designers and teams are afraid to do something bold.
It was a good scroll. I like a lot of them!
My faves were from Spain — Cadiz and CE Jupiter.
WTOP interview with the owners. Posted this morning.
https://wtop.com/dc-united/2025/09/amid-fan-uproar-dc-united-ownership-vows-changes-will-make-club-competitive-again/
This is simply emblematic of the demise of this tortured club and its fanbase. Slogans don’t work for me. Promises made were never kept (although I eventually got a roof over my head). Two games to go and I am gone. Like RFK stadium, I am down to the barebones wires, stripped of all history and desires.
The MLS roster profiles updated to show the amount of GAM each team has, while noting that GAM no longer expires (with the exception of the 4 U22 model GAM). DC currently has a GAM total of $718,569. Looking through the rest of the teams, this seems to be about a mid-pack number. Cincy and Portland (???) have $0 left, while Minnesota has over $5 Million. Miami and LAFC somehow both have over $2 Million left
Disregard, outdated info.
That is as of February of this year it looks like.
I dunno, I think it’s correct. I just looked at the roster profiles yesterday, and the GAM box still said that total would be coming the week of Sept 22. And now today we have a number (which looks to be about right, from DC’s perspective). They had started the season without very much, but have also done some good work in flipping weird “assets” that they weren’t using to rebuild the GAM number. They may have also converted some of the funds they got from selling Ku-DiPietro and Akinmboni into GAM if they hadn’t done so already.
The info I posted was outdated. Not what Sweetbuck posted.
That NWSL table simulation tool is neat! I’m going to watch Gotham vs Thorns today hoping for a tie! If we win on Sunday, it would give us a nice 8 point lead over 3rd with 4 games to go.
I was just thinking about how much of DC’s salary cap was taken up with Mateusz Klich’s wages. They got about $300,000 in relief from Atlanta, but that still would have left about a $375,000 cap hit, and ownership responsible for the rest of his DP wages. That is going to be helpful to have coming off the books, because there’s really not many other great options for opening up spaces for big contributors next year.
Here are the players whose contracts expire at the end of 2025:
Benteke
Clark
Pirani
Antley
Barraza (no option)
Leal
Dodson
MacNaughton (no option)
Fletcher
Hopkins
Kijima
Tubbs
Zouhir
Looking at that list, Leal seems like the only one that for sure will be gone. He’s contributed basically nothing, and has a big salary number that would be entirely DC’s responsibility this year. I think there’s a pretty decent argument to be made that it would be better to move on from Benteke, but the WTOP interview makes it clear that they’re trying to keep him around. He’s the second leading scorer in club history behind only Jaime Moreno, so there’s some sense there, too.
They just spent $700,000 to get Caden Clark, so one assumes that he’s in their plans for next year, but he’s only played about 30 minutes for the team so far, and has seemed to be more interested in heading to Europe. It would be pretty funny if he’s not back, if nothing else. Pirani is a similar case to Benteke. There’s a good case to be made that the team would be better off moving on from him, but if we do get 2-3 more attackers that are better than him, then he becomes a pretty decent luxury piece to have, and is honestly producing at about a median level for U-22 signings leaguewide.
Antley is decent, cheap, and versatile. I’d imagine they re-sign him. I kind of think they bring back Dodson too for similar reasons, but he could also be gone. MacNaughton hasn’t really shown enough to be earning a new contract, and I would also hope that one of the goals this offseason is to be signing another Rowles-or-better level center back. That could potentially doom Tubbs as well, especially if we land a good CB prospect in the draft or something. I’d like Tubbs to stick around, but it’s no sure thing.
Both homegrowns are probably likely to stick around. Jackson Hopkins has flourished more than anyone else under Rene Weiler, but it’s possible that Kristian Fletcher pushes to leave for a new situation. Hosei Kijima is similar to Clark, in that the club paid a bunch to get him, but then has also seen limited playing time under Weiler. Still, he’s good depth, and got his green card.
Luis Barraza has played well enough that he probably has earned a new contract. There’s enough else to fix that goalie is probably further down the list of needs. But he’s the one part of the keeper corps that’s out of contract, and it’s possible that Sogut and Weiler have eyes on a European keeper they want to bring in or something.
And lastly there’s Rida Zouhir. He could stay. He could go. It doesn’t make a ton of difference.
Basically, the point of all this is that it’s fine for ownership to say they want to bring in a bunch of new players. But their options at this point are basically bringing in two new DPs, since they want to keep Benteke. Now, that could maybe go a long way to making the rest of the offense look better, and a better offense could take some of the heat off of the defense. But both of those DP players would need to hit, and DC doesn’t really have a habit of supporting their managers with DP signings. And a lot of the ones they do sign (Peltola, Palsson) are just given that designation to manage their cap hit. We’ll also see if ownership is willing to buy out some players (Badji? Stroud?) to free up some space. But they’re in a pretty bad space now where they can sign a couple difference makers, but then need guys on the team like Enow, Peltola, Kim, and Pirani (if they pick him up) to really raise their levels if the team wants to be good.
Good analysis here overall. I can definitely see Benteke sticking around for 1 more year. I also don’t mind hanging onto Pirani. It took a bit to get there, but he’s started to come into his own recently and I think there’s enough upside there to warrant keeping him (assuming, as you said, that there’s enough other attacking talent around him).
I can also see Tubbs sticking around regardless if we get more CBs or not, given that he’s a Supplemental player and essentially makes nothing. But I can see moving on from MacNaughton. He’s been fine, but I think an upgrade would be a better use of funds there.
I think one of my bigger hopes is that the team can find some way to move on from Enow. Servania has been solid, and Peltola has been really good since about mid-season. Enow is clearly number 3 at this point (if not lower, since Hopkins can also play there), and he’s way too expensive to be that far down the depth chart. Whether they can trade/transfer him somewhere, or buy him out, I think that would go a long way, even more so than Badji or Stroud.
It is kind of impressive that, for a team that’s allowed as many goals as we have, five of our six TAM players are defenders or defensive midfielders (Schnegg, Herrera, Rowles, Peltola, Enow). So, the team has spent money there, and handed out some kind of ludicrously long contracts in the process. Schnegg and Rowles have options through 2027, and Peltola and Enow have options through 2028 (which makes me think they aren’t getting bought out).
So, the problem isn’t just spending money. It’s talent identification, and contract length, and possibly coaching.
Fair points. Though I do think some of goal allowance can be attributed to how the team was constructed and how they were asked to play, beyond just what we spend on defenders. For a bulk of the season, Herrera and Schnegg were essentially asked to be both full-time defenders AND full-time attackers, since we don’t have many dedicated wingers. We’ve seen under Weiler that when we actually shift things to have more dedicated wing play that doesn’t exclusively come from the wingbacks, we’ve been at least more solid defensively because we’re not constantly being beat by being too far up the field out wide.
That’s a decent amount of cake and not much death.
I think it’s a bit funny how many DCU fans don’t rate Pirani that much. The folks who call the games in Spanish at AppleTV always single him out as DC’s best/most talented player. He’s not someone who can consistently win you games on his own but he’s actually a fairly decent player, he needs more players like him (by this I mean players who can tiki taka a bit) so that his talents can be better exploited. Rene seems to like him but who knows.
Home at last after 68 days in two hospitals and two rehab facilities. Lengthy comments on soccer and medical treatment to come. Stay tuned.
Glad you are home!
Congrats!
Woohoo! Long hospital stays are the worst, glad you’re home
Thank you both.
Its awesome that you’re finally home!
That’s quite an ordeal. Congrats on making it back.home!
Glad to hear you’re home! Hope you’re feeling ok
