MLS Fantasy Focus: 30 for 30 (for 30)

What if I told you that a player scoring 31 points in one round would somehow be the third best score at his position? Before we get to that, Pitch PerfectFC led the scoring with a robust 231 points. At the top of the league, Nouhou Big Summer Blowout nudged overall their lead out to 126 points.

Positional Leaders

Goalkeepers
Matt Freese (NY, $8.2) saved a penalty and kept a clean sheet to lead the position with 14 points. Trailing him were Carlos Coronel (NYR, $8.9), with a clean sheet and 9 points, and Dayne St. Clair (MIN, $8.8), with a saved penalty and 8 points. For DCU, Luis Barraza ($5.8) scored 2 points.

Defenders
Miami’s Jordi Alba ($9.0) combined a goal with two assists, leading the defenders with 20 points. Behind him were Joel Waterman (CHI, $6.2) and Edier Ocampo (VAN, $7.6), both of whom combined a goal with a clean sheet for 15 and 13 points respectively. The scoring D.C. defenders were Lucas Bartlett ($5.1) and Aaron Herrera ($4.3) with 2 points and Kye Rowles ($4.7) and Conner Antley ($4.3) with 1.

Midfielders
Hannes Wolf (NY, $9.9) led the midfielders with 19 points on the strength of two goals, while Evander (CIN, $16.6) tallied three assists on the way to 17 points. Martin Ojeda (ORL, $17.4) rounded out the top three with two goals and 15 points. For United it was Brandon Servania ($4.8) with 5 points, followed by Joao Peglow ($6.4) and Jackson Hopkins ($5.6) with 2, and the quintet of Gabriel Pirani ($9.1), Caden Clark ($5.7), Hosei Kijima ($4.0), Boris Enow ($4.0), and Rida Zouhir ($4.0) with 1.

Forwards
Two men, Son Heungmin (LA, $13.5) and Lionel Messi (MIA, $16.8), split the positional and overall lead with 35 points, as the former scored four goals and assisted one while the latter scored three and assisted two. Meanwhile, Son’s teammate Denis Bouanga ($14.7) matched the Korean’s output on the way to 31 points, which in pretty much any other week would have led all scorers. D.C.’s forwards were led by Christian Benteke ($9.6) with 12 points, followed by Jacob Murrell ($4.0) with 6.

Looking Ahead

New York, Miami, Vancouver, and Portland all play twice this round, and everyone else plays once. I like CJ Dos Santos (SD, $8.1) in goal vs. San Jose and Mathias Laborda (VAN, $9.9) in defense vs. Portland and @ Seattle. I’ve got Hany Mukhtar (NSH, $16.9) in midfield vs. Houston and if you want an argument against one of Messi, Son, or Bouanga, try Alonso Martinez (NY, $13.2) at forward vs. Miami and @ the Red Bulls.
