So how bad do we lose tonight?
Still can’t believe this field in Yankee Stadium is legal.
In the Women’s Rugby World Cup match earlier in a tight back and forth match the US Women’s Eagles and the Wallaroos of Australia finished the match tied at 31 a piece. Unfortunately this means on the final matchday of pool/group play the US needs to take Samoa to the woodshed scoring at least 4 tries in the process and Australia to suffer a heavy defat to England while scoring fewer than 4 tries. Point differential and tied in pool points is the only way for the US to advance to the quarterfinals now. The US has never not advanced out of their pool at the Women’s Rugby World Cup, but I think this might be the first time it happens.
DCU with a low block so far looking to hit on the counter and let NYC have possession.
Herrera tries to lob the keeper from just beyond midfield in the DCU half, but its over the bar and hits the top of the net.
DCU is lucky as two NYC players collide in our box and the ball bounces off them and we clear it. Just waves of attack from NYC so far with some forays forward from DCU, but not many.
Schnegg picks up a yellow on his first foul….how the fuck is that a yellow? It was 15 yards into NYC’s half and it wasn’t late….
And its a goal for NYC
I’ve been doing updates on the Friday thread. Just saw this was here now
Sorry! I got it posted a little last-minute
No worries at all!
Perea goes into the book for NYC at least the ref is consistent.
Yellow to NYC for a foul on Pirani, free kick in a dangerous position
DCU isn’t making NYC’s repress hard at all and we are paying for it.
Pirani scores off the post! Level in NYC
Pirani ties it! Off a header back from Benteke and then puts it in off the post.
VAR is checking for a foul by Benteke.
Benteke goes into the book.
Level at the half. DC definitely playing a more defensive game compared to the last 2 games. Will be interesting to see how the second half goes and if that continues
Dc starts the second half actually trying to press some. Seems to be working ok so far
Kijimia for Peglow in the 58′
Kijima on for Peglow. Guessing Peglow isn’t quite 90 minutes fit yet after coming back from injury
Some sustained pressure from NYC, but so far DC has been handling it
Servania for Enow, and Antley for Hopkins in the 66′
Antley and Enow in for Hopkins and Servania. Assuming that means Herrera is going to move up to winger now
Kijima having a hell of a time trying to get past NYC’s right back
I don’t want to be a hater, but I found myself questioning why we spent $400,000 to get him. Of course, we also spent at least $700,000 on Caden Clark, who is not technically under contract yet for next year (we’d have to pick up his option) and wants to depart for Germany anyway, and yet he didn’t get to see the field in one of his scant few opportunities this year to show what he can do and why he’s worth it.
Pirani with a brace! Its 2-1! A beautiful through ball from Benteke nails NYC with too many players forward.
Priani! DC has a lead! (for now…)
Stroud getting ready to come on for somebody.
The answer is Pirani the brace man.
Stroud coming in for…someone? He’s standing there ready to come on, but the sub just isn’t being made
For Pirani
The answer is Pirani.
Enow goes into the book for a late challenge.
Herrera goes into the book. And that’s a yellow card accumulation suspension for him next week.
If there’s one thing DC is great at, it’s getting yellow card accumulation suspensions
Matt Freese has gone up for this final try in stoppage time by NYC.
Ref extending stoppage to give NYC a corner and that’s it on the clearance by Herrera….we won?….we won!
DC wins in the postage stamp that is Yankee field??? That’s possible??? 2 draws and 1 win in 3 games for Weiler, looking pretty good so far!
This had me feeling like a classic Olsen game. Looking outclassed for the majority of the match, feeling very envious about the other team’s players, and then somehow DC comes away with the win.
Winning at Yankee Stadium has been damn near impossible for this team, so I will take this every time! Congrats to Pirani for his brace, Barraza for playing well in his return to his former home field, Benteke for that incredible pass, and the rest of the team for hanging in there and stymieing one of the hottest teams in MLS.
Hate to break it to you, but it looks as if Pirani will be coming back bext year.
He’s not bad as a luxury player. He’s shown himself as a good goalscoring threat from about 15-20 yards out. Assuming we get 2-3 more DPs and Pirani is like our fourth-highest offensive option, then that seems okay to me.
To me, the book is still out on Pirani. Very good technical ability, decent athletically. But poor vision, finishing that comes and goes. He’s a better player than he was last year. Will he eventually reach the point where he’s a good withdrawn forward? Or an A-mid? He hasn’t shown that yet.
Troy: High press for 90 minutes and boot the ball to Bentenke on the attack.
Renee: Low press, and counter with Bentenke laying off the ball to the supporting forwards
Wait, supporting forwards? Same roster, different lineups and substitutions. Different tactics. Other teams will need to adjust to the changes DCU is making now. I would like to see how the new coach adjusts his tactics with different opponents. Just looking at Herrea taking the mid field shot tells me that the players might be allowed to play soccer vs a system. Its a good start.
