Bay FC vs. Washington Spirit: Preview, time, and how to watch
Washington Spirit are out to the ball game this afternoon, heading to Oracle Park, home of the SF Giants, to play Bay FC. The match is set to break NWSL attendance records, with over 38,000 tickets sold by Friday evening.
Despite the high number of fans there to root for the home team, Spirit defender Tara McKeown said the Spirit are treating this match like any other game.
“We go into every game, home or away, wanting to win and wanting to be the villain to the other team,” she said, although she also praised the stadium site and the experience of playing in front of such a big crowd, which is not a completely new one for the Spirit.
“It’s just so much fun when you look out into a crowd and you see, like, all the stands filled up and people there, whether we’re home or away… the energy in the stadium is so much fun to be a part of,” McKeown said.
The Spirit (8-4-4) head to this site of America’s pastime immediately after winning their first game on international soil. It’s been a quick turnaround from their Tuesday night game in El Salvador, which coach Adrián González said didn’t leave them much time to prepare for this game. He said increased player availability and rest management have put the Spirit in a good position in advance of the match and that his team is mentally prepared and excited.
In their second year in the league, Bay FC (4-5-7) are struggling to find a consistent winning strategy, currently sitting in 12th place and on a five-game winless streak. They’ll also be missing leading goal-scorer Penelope Hocking for today’s match. González praised their versatility and ability to attack from several different options, though, and Bay coach Albertin Montoya hinted his team might be prepared to throw the Spirit a curveball.
“We’re going to try something a little different, so maybe we can catch Spirit a little bit off guard,” he said.
Key Player: Rosemonde Kouassi
Rose Kouassi is a strong one-on-one attacker who’s tough to force off the ball, but perhaps more importantly, she’s hot. She’s scored four goals in the past two matches, including a walk-off goal in extra time at home and a giant hat trick performance in El Salvador.
Watch Out For: Taylor Huff
Taylor Huff has scored in two of Bay’s three matches so far in August. She also leads her team in shot-creating actions, with 43, and is a reliable set-piece kicker for Bay.
Challenges: While the Spirit have shown in recent matches they know how to keep control of the ball, they’ve struggled with breaking down defenses and creating goal chances, especially when faced with the unexpected. They’ll need to be creative and prepared for surprises from Bay.
Previously: A brace by Ashley Hatch put Washington on top of the first match in this series. All-time, the Spirit have won all four of their past matches against Bay FC.

Sadly, won’t be able to watch much of it live, but mercifully have set it to record. Kouassi certainly seems to be coming online. She always had the speed and dribbling, but has also figured out how to use her teammates, and has greatly improved her finishing. With Cantore and Bethune as passing originators, and Rodman getting back fitness, she could definitely feast.
Hoping for a continuation of the last few weeks. Maybe Trinity to start? I’m curious if we go with a more defensively solid midfield duo of Hal and Miura, then which one of Leicy or Croix will start?
I imagine it’s a choice for Gonzalez between starting Morgan or starting Miura. Bernal will start, it’s just a matter of what position, and that knocks someone good to the bench.
I’m also assuming, with Cantore doing so well in the offense and Croix nearing purple form again, Leicy drops to reserve role/Croix backup
Initial thoughts. They got a gorgeous day for this game. Some of the sight lines are pretty good. I’m digging the shot they just had of the goal in left field with the Bay Bridge in the background.
Minor complaint, the main view feels like it’s really far away. But I’m also digging the McCovey Cove views.
We’ll see how the personnel is deployed in reality and if Gonzalez is joshing with the projected idea, but first, the field. The Spirit are starting attacking the changed surface, while Bay FC get the smooth field in the first half. Bay will hope to have the game state before it changes over.
Anyone got an explanation for Kouassi not being in the squad?
Questionable for knee issue
Hm, I guess I’m glad it’s not behavioral
Yeah, it’s looking like more of a 4-3-3 in reality. Miura moves to the bench with Bernal going into the midfield
Spirit ahead! Wiesner puts in a cross that goes right in off the changed surface.
It didn’t look to me like the surface impacted that too much. Thoughts?
The margins in soccer are ridiculously thin. It was my impression that the bounce was maybe a little more buoyant than normal off the ground, and sometimes that’s enough
Fair.
Interestingly it looks like all four corners are in the warning track area, so that might be worth watching too.
I’m not a huge fan of Croix being stuck out wide, doesn’t make full use of her skill set. She’s also not the most sprint proficient, at least relative to Rodman and others.
Makes me wonder what Gonzalez’ reasoning is with Leicy, Cantore, and Croix all starting.
Uh, oh, Kingsbury down getting treatment
I’m gonna have to head out soon, but will catch the rest on record. Glad the game has good weather, and therefore will fit the slot
I know Hatch is out for a much happier reason, but I bet she and Sarr are really frustrated not being out there with all this creativity and potential service
Not watching because im out running errands. But I am getting updates on my phone and the Spirit have doubled their lead.
McKeown having a rough first half.
Wow. Bay FC own goal followed immediately by a Bay FC goal to make it 3-1.
Official attendance 40,091. Congrats to Bay FC on setting the new NWSL attendance record.
Kingsbury denies Silkowitz the second game tying goalie goal of the week. Spirit win!
