Acosta rumored to Fluminense, DC United Nowhere, Spirit Everywhere, and More: Wednesday Freedom Kicks
Hello, and welcome… to another Wednesday where I’m basically unable to feed you significant, DC United-specific news stories. We can, however, talk about a player who is now two friggin clubs removed from his DC United tenure who is:
In Advanced Talks with Club World Cup Semifinalist Fluminense! Bon Voyage, if it happens, I guess.
Anyway, on to concrete news that exists for other teams.
Well, this I like! Washington Spirit took Goal, Player, Assist, and Save of the Week honors for Week 14. That’s how friggin good this game was on Sunday.
For those that dig Power Rankings, Washington Spirit are pulling 2nd already with Rodman’s return.
Our beloved Jason Anderson has a rundown of NWSL, for those that want more general info on this weekend’s action.
Your daily reminder Tom Brady doesn’t really get this sport at this point.
A rather wide ranging, if brief, rundown of all the moves that are happening out in the world of men’s soccer. But not here.

Finally, a profile about Emily Fox absolutely killing it, this year, apparently every year.
That’s all I’ve got! One up me in the comments, and have a great sporting day!

Congrats to the Spirit and especially Kingsbury, Rodman, and Bethune. That’s cool that all 3 were honored.
Also, I remember when some people were like “why can’t we get Acosta back?” He’s always been a player that emotionally or perhaps I should say “stability” is just so over the play. And he wears out his welcome. Clearly talented. But really hard to build a team around.
Very meaty Wednesday post–lots of good and diverse stuff here “T”, well-done.
Thanks, Joe. Was meager sifting today, but I do my best.
You didn’t make it seem meager. There just wasn’t anything on DCU…and that’s par for the course.
I think DCU is a dead fish for the rest of the season.
Yeah, a bit distressing for people that care, and obviously not great for discussion. My advice to people is to follow The Spirit and find joy in those stories, cuz this second half of the season is gonna be far more interesting for them.
It is remarkably quiet for DC United. Pretty much as far as I can ever remember. I think they will simply ride this one out.
From what I can tell, they are going to lose a lot off long-time season ticket holders. I assume they will market those (my) coveted seats to business entities. Just watching Columbus casually last night vs Leon, it is clear that DCU has a very long way to go on many levels.
T, this was not meager in any way, shape, or form. Great DP today!
Agree with everything in this comment.
It’s so painful. I bleed black and red, but severe anemia does not equate with my future plans. Financially, there are simply better options.
Major League Rugby takes another hit as Miami Sharks announces they are not competing next season. So far LA and San Diego merged while Miami and NOLA Gold are not playing (means ceasing to exist in MLR world).
WE HAD DC UNITED NEWS!
D.C. United acquires $125,000 in 2026 GAM from Real Salt Lake in exchange for Discovery Priority for forward Victor Olatunji.
Another nothing trade, woooooo!
How dare you insult the name of Victor Olatunji, a player I deeply respect and have definitely heard of before
Bogert had reported on him going to RSL for a couple weeks now, but never mentioned that DC had his discovery rights. He was at Sparta Pargue before RSL, apparently
Maybe that’s DC United’s new function in the league: Holding the sweet discovery rights to nobodies, and biding our time to be relevant in that context…
I think this still pales in comparison to the “trade” we had with the Galaxy earlier this year, where we essentially traded them 125k 2025 GAM for like 150k 2026 GAM. DC is just a bank now lol
Oh, yeah, classic MLS nonsense, that one
Prague has great beer.
Would be more productive if we had a Thomas Müller on our discovery list.
Thank you for the umlaut. Nicely done!
I would honestly believe we had him in our (foggy) sights at some point before the season went belly up. He fits the profile Mackay has gone for in Europea. But he’ll probably be successful because he’s not coming here.
As for his abilities, I imagine he’s alright. He was #7 for a team that has at least played in the Champions League recently, if outgunned, and at 25 he’s a decent acquisition age.
I give DCU great props for discovering a guy who was mostly a sub for Sparta Prague. His goal-scoring pace was roughly equivalent to Pirani’s (G+A) pace, but presumably against better competition. Hopefully, we can milk more GAM out of our discovery list, and maybe even beat the bushes until we find someone who actually wants to play here.
Let’s buy Hearts of Midlothian.
It’s something to be getting tangible assets for players that aren’t even in the system at all. So, hat’s off to Mackay for that. But without turning those assets into players that actually will be in the system, it makes for some pretty thin gruel.
Is that our new team name–“Thin Gruel”?
I boycott until Irn Bru is on tap.
