MLS Fantasy Focus: I don’t have a pun for Alonso Martinez

With no teams playing twice, scores came down a bit this week. The round’s leader, with a score of 70 points, was Bayern Neverlusen. Our overall leader, Nouhou Big Summer Blowout, now leads by 73 points.

Positional Leaders

Goalkeepers
Both Chris Brady (CHI, $6.2) and Rocco Rios Novo ($4.4) kept a clean sheet on the way to 9 points, leading the goalkeepers. Just behind them was Yohei Takaoka (VAN, $10.3), with a clean sheet of his own and 8 points. For D.C., Luis Barraza ($5.6) scored 1 point.

Defenders
Vancouver’s Mathias Laborda ($9.2) paired a goal with a clean sheet for 14 points, leading the defenders. Trailing him were Ian Smith (POR, $5.2), with 10 points on a clean sheet and an assist, and Jack Elliott (CHI, $6.7), with a clean sheet and 9 points. The scoring United defenders were Kye Rowles ($5.5) with 2 points, Lucas Bartlett ($5.1) with 1, and Conner Antley ($4.8) with -1.

Midfielders
Sebastian Berhalter (VAN, $10.7) led the midfielders with 13 points on the strength of an assist and 5 attacking bonus points. Tied for second on 10 points were Alexey Miranchuk (ATL, $8.7) and Jean-Claude Ngando (VAN, $5.9), both of whom scored a goal. The DCU midfield was led by Gabriel Pirani ($8.7) with 8 points, followed by Joao Peglow ($7.8) with 7, Randall Leal ($4.2) with 3, and the quartet of Hosei Kijima ($4.0), Brandon Servania ($4.5), Jared Stroud ($4.0), and Jackson Hopkins ($4.0) with 1 each.

Forwards
Alonso Martinez (NY, $11.3) scored a hat trick on the way to 19 points, leading the forwards and all players. Well off the pace were Logan Farrington (DAL, $5.2) and Mikael Uhre (PHI, $7.0), both of whom scored a brace and 12 points. The lone scoring forward for D.C. was Christian Benteke ($10.2) with 9 points.

Looking Ahead
It’s a long wait until the next round, as MLS takes a break for Leagues Cup until August 9. When league action returns, I like Dayne St. Clair (MIN, $7.7) in goal vs. Colorado and Luca Orellano (CIN, $10.8) in defense vs. Charlotte. Anders Dreyer (SD, $15.1) is the right call at Kansas City, and I’m still riding with Petar Musa (DAL, $11.2) at forward vs. Portland.
