D.C. United vs. Nashville SC: Preview, time, and how to watch
D.C. United returns to Buzzard Point looking to bounce back and earn crucial points against Nashville SC, who sit in third place in the Eastern Conference. The Black-and-Red aim to capitalize on a Nashville team coming off a midweek road win and quick turnaround, while also trying to end Nashville’s impressive 12-game unbeaten streak.
This matchup comes just six weeks after the Black-and-Red played to a 0-0 draw with Nashville at GEODIS Park. Goalkeeper Luis Barraza kept a clean sheet for D.C. with crucial saves to hold off a fiery Nashville attack. Head coach Troy Lesesne emphasized this week that the focus is squarely on delivering consistency and capitalizing on the opportunities ahead, including the MLS playoff race and the U.S. Open Cup.
“The opportunity’s there, and that’s the approach we’re taking 100%,” Lesesne said. “If we can accomplish that target… we’re taking the right steps toward success in 2025.”
Lesesne could get a boost in squad depth this week with the return of players from international duty, including Matti Peltola (Finland U-21), Kye Rowles (Australia), and Boris Enow (Cameroon). Another potential boost for the Black-and-Red? Key players returning to practice (and possibly the pitch) after being sidelined with injuries, including Christian Benteke and João Peglow.

Key Player: Luis Barraza
With Nashville’s offensive dream team on deck, the Black-and-Red will look to Luis Barraza to pull off a repeat performance and keep a clean sheet. With 49 saves across 12 matches this season, Barraza is up to the task.
Watch Out For: Sam Surridge and Hany Mukhtar
Nashville’s offensive engine is firing on all cylinders. Sam Surridge leads MLS with 15 goals and is coming off a hat trick against New England, while Hany Mukhtar, the 2022 MLS MVP, continues to be one of the league’s most dangerous creators with 11 assists and 42 shots on target. Slowing down this duo is non-negotiable if D.C. wants a result.
Challenges: Nashville arrives in peak form, unbeaten in 12 straight matches, where they’ve racked up 27 goals. The quick turnaround after a midweek game might offer D.C. an edge in energy levels, but Nashville’s cohesion, fitness, and depth make them a formidable opponent. The Black-and-Red must also contend with the absence of key players, including Aaron Herrera, still away with Guatemala at the Gold Cup, and potentially Christian Benteke and João Peglow, who are questionable for tonight’s match.
Previously: The first leg of the series between D.C. and Nashville on May 17 ended in a 0-0 stalemate at GEODIS Park. The Black-and-Red leaned on goalkeeper Luis Barraza, who recorded five saves to secure the clean sheet. Both sides struggled to create clear chances, with D.C. registering just three shots and 45.8% possession.

Sigh. If we must, we must.
Fucking do something, United
So how bad do we lose tonight?
Wow, an issue with Apple I will be unable to resolve tonight. So, no viewing for me.
I’m gonna laugh if this is a random blue moon victory
Benteke on the bench. Badji starts up top.
Antley with a great track back and win the ball back from Muyl who beat him for pace
Bartlett picks up a yellow and yields a pk on a great ball from Najar end behind as he takes down Mukhtar.
I think its under review for a potential DOGSO red.
Penalty and yellow confirmed. Surridge steps up.
Surridge beats Barraza who guessed the right way.
Nashville keeping DCU pinned in their own half.
Cooling/Hydration break.
My 3 year old has decided she likes the pink “team” in this case the refs. Pink is one of her favorite colors.
Kijima beats a player but then undehrits the pass and hits Badji whose offside instead of skipping behind him and to Servania and Schnegg making the far post run.
Barraza saves our bacon as a route 1 ball over the top beats the entire back line and finds Surridge.
Long throw it Schnegg is headed on by Bartlett it finds Servania who heads it right at Willis from the edge of the box. But hey it’s a shot on goal.
Was it? That seems too generous
Stroud picks up a yellow for the American football tackle from behind on Muyl.

Peltola coming for Tubbs.
Only 1 out of 4 long throws by Schnegg has gotten past Najar at RB for Nashville.
Benteke getting ready to come in.
Benteke comes in for Badji in the 62′.
Also Pirani for Stroud and Peglow for Kijima.
Najar with another ball, but Surridge is offside….Peltola was 1 on 3….quick counter on a misplay…
Cooling/hydration break at 75′
Hopkins for Servania is the final change for DCU.
Pirani with a great run, but just ends up with 3 Nashville players in front of him that block off the final pass to Benteke.
Pirani picks up a yellow for…definitely could be a red on review a frustration response after being held and not getting a call.
Hell Brugman the Nashville player should get a yellow for that mugging for arms around shoulder and neck of Pirani.

I’m not confident about the Open Cup match on Wednesday night in Nashville.
Will, I just want to thank you for your consistent updates. My attention was split tonight with a nascar race on at the same time as the game, and your updates really help fill in parts I missed. Great work, and it’s much appreciated
Final 0-1 Nashville
This team needs investment badly. Even with Benteke and others back from injury this side really pales in comparison to the better sides in the East. Right now, I doubt I will renew my MLS season pass for next year, there is just no joy watching this team or MLS nowadays.
Lesesne and Mackay have over corrected too. Sure the Red Bull style press is a bit tired and they were leaking goals, but they’ve been horrific on both sides of the ball playing out of a low block. Previous iterations of DC United could pull that off and even at times be lethal on the counter playing out of the low block. Lesesne playing this side out of a low block robs the team of any identity or joy.
Ted Ku-DiPietro scored tonight, and a rebound off his saved shot led to another Colorado goal. Just in case you were in the mood to make heart eyes at any other former United players besides Andy Najar and Joe Willis.
This is a very damning post. Spot on examples of “unlucky decisions.”
