Real Salt Lake vs. D.C. United: Preview, time, and how to watch
D.C. United is on the road in Utah, looking for redemption after a devastating 7-1 loss to the Chicago Fire at Audi Field. When speaking about the loss, head coach Troy Lesesne said, “We look it straight in the eyes… It’s the second time it’s happened this year where it’s just completely unacceptable.”
Despite the setback, the Black-and-Red remain focused on bouncing back against Real Salt Lake, a side that has gone winless in its last seven matches and will be missing key contributors due to international duty.
Lesesne’s squad will welcome back much-needed reinforcements, including Kye Rowles, Boris Enow, and Kristian Fletcher. Still, D.C. will remain without Aaron Herrera and Matti Peltola, who are both on international duty, while several players continue working back from injury, including star striker Christian Benteke.
It’s been nearly two years since these two sides last met, with Real Salt Lake taking a 2-1 win at Audi Field in June 2023 after D.C. United was reduced to 10 men in the first half. This time, the Black-and-Red arrive at America First Field aiming to flip the script and put in a performance that reflects their organized, fast-starting display that earned them a 2-1 win over FC Cincinnati just weeks ago.
“We’ve created momentum… but not sustained it,” Lesesne said. “We need to start the match in a good fashion, not concede chances, and take the initiative.”

With Salt Lake reeling and D.C. determined to reset, Saturday’s late-night clash offers both sides a chance to reestablish form in the second half of the MLS season.

Key Player: Jared Stroud
Stroud remains a creative spark for D.C. United. In the Chicago match, Stroud led the team with three chances created and won five ground duels. With absences in midfield, his work rate, leadership, and delivery in the final third could be key to unlocking a Salt Lake defense that has conceded in three straight home matches.
Watch Out For: Diogo Gonçalves
With Diego Luna away on Gold Cup duty, the Portuguese midfielder will be tasked with leading the RSL attack. Gonçalves has one goal and two assists this season and is second on the team in both assists and shots on target. Expect him to be central to RSL’s build-up and dangerous around the box, especially against a D.C. backline still working to regain its shape and confidence.
Challenges: D.C. United is still coping with the fallout of its heaviest loss of the season. While key players like Rowles and Enow return, the absence of Herrera and Peltola limits both defensive coverage and midfield control. The altitude at America First Field presents an additional challenge, although Lesesne noted that the team would limit time on-site pre-match to reduce the impact of acclimatization.
Previously: In their last meeting on June 17, 2023, Real Salt Lake defeated D.C. United 2-1 at Audi Field. D.C. went down a man in the 26th minute and struggled to generate chances, managing just two shots on target. Real Salt Lake capitalized with goals from Pablo Ruiz and Danny Musovski. Christopher Durkin responded with a goal for D.C., but the short-handed Black-and-Red couldn’t complete the comeback.

Tonight’s XI: Barraza, Antley, Bartlett, Rowles, Tubbs, Schnegg, Enow, Servania, Pirani, Leal, Badji
Real Salt Lake XI: Cabral, Vera, Glad, Katranis, Caliskan, Ruiz, Palacio, Gozo, Diogo, Russell, Agada
Well that was frustrating….Old Glory DC goes out 27-16 in the Eastern Conference Semifinal. They had the lad 16-10 at the half, but then got shut out in the 2nd half. Very much a tale of two halves. OGDC was dominant in the second half had 73% possession played the half pretty much in Chicago’s half, but only managed to get 9 pts off 3 penalty kicks from all that pressure. Then Chicago scored a try off an interception line break and converted it to go up 10-9. Then as time was expiring in the first half, Chicago’s kick to touch on a penalty didn’t make it touch and Old Glory DC struck quickly to score a try and converted it to go up 16-10 at half. Then Chicago just came firing out of the gates and never looked back. Chicago’s strong defense and 187 tackles with an 87% success rate shows it.
Oh Salt Lake has Johnny Russel now….
Can’t say I realized that either until I saw it
I agree with the commentators that’s odd not seeing him with Kansas City….he’s just been there for forever.
Pirani with a shot that gets deflected and doesn’t miss by much.
and the corner comes to nothing…
Barraza has decent shot stopping, but his distribution is terrible. Benteke back would help but I don’t see him as the future.
Hell I don’t know if we’ll get him back this season.
And there’s 1…how many more goals are we conceding tonight?
We are so lucky not to be down 2 right now.
Badji is down. Takes a punch from the SLC keeper and Cabral gets away with punching Badji in the head and getting no ball.
I have to beg to differ. They’re all very questionable. Everything about this franchise is questionable. I find myself questioning what the He 🏒 🏒 this team does in practices. They play as if they’ve never practiced together.
So who else is of the position that we won’t win again this season?
We still play the Galaxy and Montreal again, they got a couple more in them at least
Eh Idk the Galaxy tied 3-3 today with St Louis and Montreal is beating Houston 3-1 right now.
Tubbs catches an elbow from Agada who picks up a yellow.
Dear lord how many concussions is RSL going to give us
and pick up yellows or no calls?
Dodson for Tubbs and Fletcher for Leal
Nick Rimando going into RSL’s ring of honor tonight.
Stroud came on for Pirani.
Kijima for Servania and Murrell for Antley
DCU saved by offside flag.
Oh so that’s a VAR but the elbow to Tubbs’ head isnt..?
and its a goal on VAR.
Or the punch to Badji’s head. And that was by no means clear and obvious
And there’s the 3rd….
Gozo is offside and affects the play…as is the goal scorer…and VAR pulls it back.
Swiss Cheese defense. Run like they’re stuck in molasses.
\
Rescued by VAR.
12 minutes of added time….wow…
As soon as a DCU game starts there’s blood in the water.
At this point watching games is just torture…
