MLS Fantasy Focus: Lionel’s Riches
This round, with a scorching total of 226, 33 more than anyone else, Don’t be Messi with my roster led the league. Stop me if you’ve heard this before, but Nouhou Big Summer Blowout is the overall leader, with the advantage now down to 42 points.
Positional Leaders
Goalkeepers
A pair of players, Stefan Frei (SEA, $7.9) and Novak Micovic (LAG, $5.4), each kept a clean sheet on the way to 11 points, splitting the lead. Aljaz Ivacic (NE, $8.8) kept a clean sheet of his own, scoring 10 points. DCU’s Luis Barraza ($6.3) scored 6 points.
Defenders
Ilay Feingold (NE, $8.8) scored three goals, kept a clean sheet, and had an assist on the way to 31 points, which would have comfortably led the overall scorers, but thanks to someone else, it just led the position. Meanwhile, Kai Wagner (PHI, $11.9), tallied a goal, clean sheet, and an assist for 24 points, and his teammate, Nathan Harriel ($8.6) paired a goal with a clean sheet. The D.C. defense was led by Conner Antley ($5.2) with 10 points, followed by David Schnegg ($5.2) with 6, Aaron Herrera ($6.3) with 5, both Lucas Bartlett ($5.1) and Kye Rowles ($4.4) with 4, and both Matti Peltola ($4.0) and Derek Dodson ($4.0) with 1.
Midfielders
With two goals and an assist, D.C.’s own Gabriel Pirani ($6.5) led the midfielders with 19 points. Behind him were Martin Ojeda (ORL, $12.4), with 18 points on an assist (and a whopping 5 key pass points from 20 in one game), and Hany Mukhtar (NSH, $13.0) with 16 points on a goal and an assist. The remaining United midfielders were Joao Peglow ($8.1) with 5 points, Hosei Kijima ($5.1) and Jared Stroud ($4.5) with 4, Brandon Servania ($4.6) with 3, and both Boris Enow ($4.0) and Randall Leal ($4.4) with 1.
Forwards
Lionel Messi (MIA, $13.8) posted four goals and three assists on the way to 42 points. I hope you captained him. Meanwhile, his teammate, Luis Suarez ($9.8) scored a comparatively pedestrian 27 points on the strength of three goals and an assist, and Sam Surridge (NSH, $11.5) scored 23 points on three goals. For DCU it was just Jacob Murrell ($4.0) with 3 points.
Looking Ahead
This is just about the polar opposite of the double-game bonanza we’ve had recently, as just 10 teams are playing one game this week — DCU, Chicago, Colorado, Austin, Portland, St. Louis, LAFC, Kansas City, Vancouver, and Seattle. Everyone else is on bye. Why this wouldn’t be folded into next week is a bit of a mystery, but here we go. In goal, Brad Stuver (ATX, $8.9) at Colorado, and in defense, Tristan Blackmon (VAN, $10.1) vs. Seattle. In midfield, Philip Zinckernagel (CHI, $10.9) at DCU, and at forward, Denis Bouanga (LA, $11.0) vs. Kansas City. Good luck!
