Philadelphia Union vs. D.C. United: Preview, time, and how to watch
While recent weeks have been tough for D.C. United, they are riding high after a resilient collective performance earned the Black-and-Red three points last week against their rival, New York Red Bulls. Today, they face another challenging opponent, the Philadelphia Union.
Philadelphia joins the match tonight after a 3-0 victory over Atlanta United last week. The Union will aim for all three points in front of their home supporters at Subaru Park. Widely regarded as a team to beat in the East, Philadelphia is poised to present a significant challenge to the Black-and-Red tonight. With experienced goalkeeper Andre Blake between the sticks, Jakob Glesnes running the backline, and standout strikers Tai Baribo and Mikael Uhre, the Union is downright lethal.
The Black-and-Red will look for a repeat performance to snag another road win this week. Improved defensive coordination and strong transitional play were instrumental in D.C.’s victory over the Red Bulls. They will prove critical if the Black-and-Red hope to in against the Union.
Philadelphia excels on the counter and will challenge D.C. United if they don’t remain sharp. Head coach Troy Lesesne emphasized the importance of maintaining a strong defense to facilitate effective transitions, saying, “Before you can get into transition, you have to defend really well.”
Players like Dominique Badji, who stepped up for D.C. against the Red Bulls, will be crucial in maintaining possession and alleviating pressure from a formidable Union side. Lesesne praised Badji’s most recent performance, saying, “The dirty work Badji did… the way he relieves pressure for us is really a special quality.”
João Peglow may be missing in action this week. After his breakout performance last week, delivering a game-winning brace, he’s listed as out due to injury, despite no issues being mentioned earlier this week.
On the questionable list is stalwart striker Christian Benteke, who was removed from last week’s match in the 29th minute due to injury. Lesesne was optimistic about Benteke’s recovery, but wasn’t rushing to return him to the pitch. He won’t play this evening. Lesesne said, “we’re never going to rush a guy who’s not 100% yet.”

Key Player: Dominique Badji
Badji’s efforts last week were instrumental in D.C. United’s win against the Red Bulls. His grit and ability to support the Black-and-Red in retaining possession are literal game changers.
Watch Out For: Tai Baribo
Baribo has made an impact for the Union so far this season, scoring seven goals in eight matches. He will give D.C. United’s backline a run for their money and then some.
Challenges: The Black-and-Red need to pull out another gritty win to keep up their momentum and edge toward playoff contention in the East.
Previously: When D.C. United last met the Philadelphia Union last September; they suffered a 4-0 defeat. The Black-and-Red will look to flip the script and deny Philadelphia a home win.

Read all about in the stunningly visual novel, “How Bad Was My Sports Team…”
Rowles picks up an early yellow for delaying the restart.
I think that means he’ll miss the next game for accumulation
yup and the same is true for Schnegg and Herrera’s next yellows as well.
It’s ok, we’ll just rotate with our excellent depth
Well shit it has begun
Luckily, we’re only on track for 6-0.
Pulling from X (formerly twitter)
Starting XI: Badji, Kijima, Schnegg, Servania, Herrera, Murrell, Stroud, Rowles, MacNaugton, Bartlett, Barraza
Bench: Antley, Dodson, Enow, Hakim Karamoko (the draft pick), Kim, Leal, Peltola, Pirani, Zouhir
That Kim, Peltola, and Pirani are already in the doghouse makes me quite uneasy for how this locker room goes
Murrell tries a bike and puts it just over the bar.
Badji skies his breakaway effort over the bar.
Badji eschews composure with that 1 vs 1
Rolf the Magic Headband gets a mention from the commentators. The last time DCU won in Philly 1-0 in 2014.
That’s tragic
DC United is sucking one afternoon of your life away. This is for posterity’s sake, so be honest- how do you feel?
Murrell puts the 2 on 1 break right at Blake.
Did anyone else’s feed just cut out?
Really nice curled service out wide by Kijima for Stroud, both Murrell and Badji do nothing with the service.
Murrell has another chance on a breakaway, hammers it into Blake
Schnegg is hurt….
That half of soccer could light up a room simply by leaving it
Well that felt like it was coming…
The soccer gods injuring Peglow for this game is the equivalent of the lord of Swamp Castle stopping that bloody singing.
Apologies for the copious references, not much soccer by us to comment on
Karamoko comes in and picks up a yellow right away…
There’s the 3rd….Bartlett….
Not good, Bob.
How many more are we giving up?
The fact that the Union are playing a 15-yr old against us should tell anyone everything they need to know about the lack of respect around the league for DC United.
The best compliment I can give this DC United performance is that it was easy to interact with the folks I’m visiting and go downstairs to get some dinner without missing anything.
Stoppage time be like
Could’ve been worse in terms of goals given up. And now we have surpassed SKC as the worst defense in the league with the most goals given up. What are clean sheets again?
We might well have been too weak to put down properly.
Also the worst goal differential. MTL still way behind in the Wooden Spoon race, but anything’s possible. Anybody good coming out next year?
Well Old Glory just got walloped by Houston 48-20….OGDC is now 4-6 after 11 weeks. There are 5 games 6 games remaining for OGDC in the season. We need NOLA and Miami to lose tomorrow to maintain our playoff spot. Though if Anthem do beat Miami tomorrow it would be Anthem’s first franchise win after going winless last season as well as so far this season.
Sigh.
Didn’t we have a lot of chances, especially in the first half? Don’t goals change games? If we score early and often, the final result would have been different. Jacob Murrell in particular was in a position to make a difference?
As I said before, this team is worse than last year’s team.
My recommendation.
Hire Jim Curtain and give him the resources to field a competitive team,
This is not a ridiculous remark.
Now, it was only second, actually a trusted third hand, that the locker room is really not buying into things anymore. I hope that is not true.
