DC Power loses road match to Dallas Trinity on Chioma Ubogagu free kick
DC Power FC dropped a road match to Dallas Trinity on Wednesday night, losing the match 1-0. A 23rd minute free kick goal by Chioma Ubogagu was the difference in the match.
DC Power entered the match searching for their first win of the spring schedule and were going up against a Dallas team that leads the league in goals scored. DC was able to keep Dallas Trinity largely at bay, holding them scoreless from the run of play. However, after a foul on the edge of the box in the 23rd minute, Dallas Trinity’s Chioma Ubogagu provided a terrific free kick to give her team the lead.
We were organized defensively,” interim coach Phil Nana said after the match. “We prepared well and knew exactly what they were going to come out in. They made a few adjustments and some positional rotations, but we were able to sort that out quickly. A goal from set piece and that seems to be our Achillies heel these set pieces. However, I knew we were going to come in and need to defend for 90 minutes and they did that very well.”
Having to make several changes to the lineup due to five players being out on international duty, DC Power utilized some academy players to raise the level in the second half. “I thought the academy players came on and changed the game,” Phil Nana said. “In hindsight, I wish we got them on a bit earlier. They came on with different ideas, different paces. They seemed to be fearless….Super happy with the academy and that puts them in a good place. It shows the confidence that we have in these players and now it’s up to me to give them more opportunities to showcase their skills.”
DC Power was able to get some chances on goal, including a shot by Gianna Gourley that hit the crossbar, but they weren’t able to find the equalizer. Despite the loss, the team felt like they had their chances to get a result.
“We had good moments, and we had bad moments,” Susanna Fitch said after the match, her 19th straight start for DC Power. “Most importantly, we fought until the last minute. We’re working together as a team and trying to grow in our game but there’s still a lot of areas that we need to improve upon. We’re growing and we’re getting there but unfortunate not to get that win tonight and find that ball in the back of the net.”
Nana also felt like the team was getting closer to getting the result, but at the end, Nana said the team “can’t seem to put together the 90 minutes that we want.”
DC Power FC falls to 4-10-6 on the season, remaining at the bottom of the USL Super League standings.
