Spirit win, DC United lose, and more: Monday Freedom Kicks

Happy Monday everyone, and it’s a very happy one for me…my basketball team is going to the Final Four! Catch me in San Antonio this weekend, but while I figure out my life and what to pack, here’s the news from the weekend:

Ashley Hatch brace boosts Washington Spirit to 2-0 win over Bay FC (DP)

The Spirit took care of business against Bay FC with a brace from Ashley Hatch!

Post-Match Facts | #DCvCLB

Christian Benteke scored first, but Columbus was able to come back and win it 2-1 at Audi Field on Saturday night.

Takeaways from Loudoun United’s home opener win (DP)

Loudoun United wins their home opener and continue their nice start to the season.

Rodman: Back injury will never be 100 percent (PSW)

Trinity Rodman said after the match on Friday night that her back will never be fully healthy again, and that she is learning how to manage it day by day.

FIFA says América, LAFC could have Club World Cup playoff (ESPN)

We could have a Club World Cup playoff should León’s disqualification from the tournament by confirmed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport, and LAFC would be involved in it.

Jared Stroud’s infectious work rate paces DC United’s trophy ambitions (DP)

I recently got to speak with Jared Stroud on his success from last season, becoming one of the veterans of this DC United team, and how his work rate hopefully is part of the key to the team’s renaissance.

Congrats to Alex Morgan and her husband Servando on the birth of their second child, Enzo!

Davidson limps off in tears with potentially serious knee injury (PSW)

This would be bad news for Gotham as well as the USWNT if Tierna Davidson is out for an extended period of time.

Enjoy the day, everyone.

The view from Buenos Aires

1) DC United was at least competitive against Columbus 1-2 (seen on Apple MLS). If only they could finish their many created chances!

2) Injury-racked Washington Spirit outlasted Bay FC 2-0 (seen on NWSL+ — first time ever). Two week international break should allow four key players, including Croix Bethune, come off injury break.

Old Glory lost in a shoot out with one of the most lethal offenses in the league 54-44 to LA who after losing their first 3 games to start the season have now won 3 straight. Normally in MLR, if you’re on the road and dropping a 40-burger on somebody you’d expect to win…

Apparently Vermes was finally fired from SKC. Change has been a long time coming for them, but still going to be odd having a new regime in charge.

Despite the 2-1 loss to Columbus, ESPN FC’s MLS Power Rankings have DCU moved from 25th to 23rd.

Despite yet another goal from Christian Benteke, D.C. fell 2-1 to the Columbus Crew. At times, it’s clear that Troy Lesesne only has one DP at his disposal. Saturday was one of those times.

I very much enjoy Troy, I think he’s a great player’s coach, and I think there is some promise to his tactics. But I’m starting to get a little weary of the team not winning very much, and often for similar reasons. And I have to tell myself, he’s only got one DP to work with, and apparently no GAM.

I hope he farts in Dave Kasper’s office every day.

Plus we sent our 2nd DP to Atlanta but our still responsible for his pay even though he doesn’t play with us.

ESPNFC NWSL Power Rankings see the Spirit move up to 3rd from 4th after this weekend.

Days after being named to Emma Hayes’ U.S. women’s national team roster to play Brazil, Spirit striker Ashley Hatch scored a brace in Washington’s 2-0 win against Bay FC. She scored both in the air just three minutes apart, moving into NWSL’s top five goal scorers in regular season history. Getting the ball wide and dropping it on Hatch’s head seems to be an effective game plan for the Spirit, and with Trinity Rodman back in the starting lineup, they’re building some momentum.
