DC Power draws Brooklyn FC on late Gianna Gourley equalizer
DC Power FC fought back to 1-1 draw against Brooklyn FC at Audi Field on Sunday afternoon. DC Power entered the match needing a result after a pair of losses over the past couple of matches, and Gianna Gourley’s 84th minute goal was able to give the team a point.
Brooklyn FC opened scoring in the 23rd minute when Mackenzie George was able to pounce on a rebounded shot to make it 1-0 to the visitors. Interim head coach Phil Nana attributed “poor positioning” to the opportunity for Brooklyn to get deep into the box and get off a couple of shots in space.
DC Power, wanting to be aggressive, made a couple of adjustments in the second half, but the equalizing goal still eluded them for most of the match. However in the 83rd minute, Gianna Gourley was finally able to find the equalizer. After getting the ball fed over the top of the defense, Gourley was able to chip the ball over the keeper for the goal.
After the match, Gianna Gourley described what she saw in getting the goal. “So I had actually talked to Claire [Constant] and Wolfey [Madison Wolfbauer] right before the goal and I said, ‘look, I’m gonna stay high’ and they’re like, ‘you post up or do whatever, I’ll look for you.’ And so I started to come in and I saw Claire look up, and then I drew the defender in and she played a perfect ball in behind…I just saw the goalie out and figured why not, just chip her.”
The teams weren’t able to muster anything before the final whistle sounded, and both teams walked away with a point. DC Power are next on the road against Dallas Trinity on April 2nd.
