DC Power falls to Lexington SC in spring home opener
DC Power FC returned to Audi Field on Sunday afternoon, playing Lexington SC in the first home match of the spring portion of the USL Super League season. Despite controlling a lot of the match, DC Power ultimately lost by a 2-1 score.
DC Power started out on the attack early, getting a couple of chances in the first five minutes of the match. They were not able to punch the ball home, failing to get a good shot on goal in both instances.
Lexington scored first, hitting the back of the net in the 23rd minute. Off a corner kick, DC Power had trouble clearing the ball out of the box. A weak clearance fell to the foot of Julie Mackin, who took a dribble and drilled a laser from 25 yards out straight into the back of the net.
DC Power thought they had the equalizer 10 minutes later, as a brilliant set piece led to a cross being headed into the net by defender Amber DiOrio. However, DiOrio was slightly offside on the pass, and the goal came off the board. DC had a few more chances before halftime, but couldn’t get the equalizer.
DC Power once again came out of the locker room trying to press for an equalizer. With 20 total shots, they had several chances to get back even. However, Lexington was better at capitalizing on their scoring chances.
In the 60th minute, Lexington made it 2-0. After a cross was headed on net, DC Power goalkeeper Morgan Aquino made a great save. However, Lexington’s Hannah White was there for the putback.
In the 77th minute, Loza Abera and Myra Konte subbed on for DC Power, and there was an immediate boost of energy from those two players. They tried desperately to help boost their team to getting a goal, and in the 85th minute they got one. Gianna Gourley snaked her way into the box with a few nifty moves, and she found Loza Abera just inside the penalty spot, who hammered it home to pull DC Power within one.
DC Power continued to press for the equalizer, having a couple more chances. However, they weren’t able to find the back of the net and Lexington takes the win.
With the loss, DC Power drops to 3W-8L-5D on the season. They have also dropped to the bottom of the USL Super League standings. They hope to get back on track this coming weekend when they travel to take on Spokane Zephyr.
