Turnovers lead to Grabias hat trick in 3-0 DC Power loss

DC Power FC’s struggles at home continue. On Wednesday night, the team suffered a 3-0 defeat against Brooklyn FC, with turnovers once again being the story and leading to three Luana Grabias goals.

The match started slowly with both teams trying to get into the flow. Brooklyn FC had the first real chance in the match when Mackenzie Pluck had a shot that went over the bar in the 9th minute. DC Power was able to have their first real chance in the 25th minute when Susanna Friedrichs caught the ball on the right wing on the break. She sent in a cross and Jorian Baucom had a great chance in front of the net, but wasn’t able to sneak the ball past Brooklyn goalkeeper Sydney Martinez.

Five minutes later, Brooklyn opened their account. After DC Power was on the break, Brooklyn forced DC Power to retreat. Then, a passing mistake found the ball at the feed of Luana Grabias from a Mackenzie Pluck pass. She fought off both Claire Constant and Madison Wolfbauer before evading goalkeeper Morgan Aquino to score to give Brooklyn the 1-0 lead.

She didn’t wait long to do it again. Just three minutes later, it was another turnover that led Brooklyn on the break. Again, it was Pluck who split the defense and was able to feed Grabias on the left side. Grabias fired a powerful low shot from the left foot home to make it 2-0.

DC Power just wasn’t able to put anything together in the first half, and Brooklyn continued to apply pressure. Brooklyn almost got a third goal in the 42nd minute, when off a free kick from the right side, Aquino couldn’t handle the cross. The ball bounced in the air to midfielder Emily Yaple, whose volley went just wide.

Two minutes later, Brooklyn made it 3-0. On another turnover, Luana Grabias collected the ball and had an absolutely brilliant individual play where she dribbled through the defense and fired a left footed shot past Aquino for the first half hat trick.

Allie Flanagan and Riley Cross entered the match at halftime for DC Power hoping to bring a spark, but one didn’t come initially, with both teams not really doing much in the first 15 minutes of the half. They were aggressive in pushing forward, as head coach Fred Brillant said they wanted to “just try and go for it” since nothing worked in the first half. They were able to get a few more looks on goal, but their final touch eluded them as the ball stayed out of the net. Second half substitute Mariah Lee had a chance in the 86th minute on a great ball sent over the top of the defense on a nifty pass by Claire Constant. Lee was able to put a shot on goal quickly, but it was stopped by Sydney Martinez, and that was essentially it.

With the loss, DC Power FC drops to 2W-6L-4D on the season. With just 6 goals on the season, they’re the only team that has not reached double figures in scoring on the season. They have two more road matches before the midseason break, the next coming on November 23rd when they travel to take on Fort Lauderdale FC.
