Annie, I’m here for the chat. Graphics? I know y’all want to put on a good face and all. But it’s the mere existence of this thread so we can post obsessive over-reacting comments during the game that grabs me. Thanks!

Zimmerman toe pokes in a second in a mad scramble from a free kick!

That’s the kind of divine, nuanced play you need in a tournament

I have no idea why Inter are in for Tessman. What a lumbering dud.

Man, don’t like losing Busio, even if this game seems in hand. Long term, we definitely need him

Also wonder how much gas NZ has after the first game, it is a quick turnaround

Where was this team against France?

The French GK had a very good game, and, this may be a surprise, but I believe France has better youth prospects than NZ. Oh yeah, and Olise and Lacazette, cuz France will be damned if they don’t win at home

I thought we played France pretty well. The score line did not represent the effort.

Anyone else kinda bummed we can’t see age eligible Pepi or Balogun out there? We’re really missing a great forward, despite the scoreline this game

If anyone is interested the US Men’s Rugby placed 8th this morning losing to Argentina 17-7. The French took gold after handing Fiji their first ever defeat in Olympic Men’s Rugby 7s. The Aussies lost 26-19 to South Africa after coming back from 19-7 to 19-19 in the bronze medal match.

The Women’s tourney begins tomorrow.

US close it out 4-1. Ultimately, if you’re gonna give up a brain fart goal, do it when you’re up 4-0 most of the way through the second half. Good connectivity and team ethic. This team has been a lot more fun to watch than I expected, and I gotta give Mitrovic some serious credit

Wow, Canada women deducted an astounding 6 points in group stage play, meaning they’re sitting on -3 points after winning their opener. I think it would be kinder to just ban them. Players didn’t do it. Making them sweat through a statistically improbable scenario is cruel

I know FIFA docked them 6 points. But is that for the Olympics? I honestly couldn’t tell from the article I read

Excellent result. One of the better comments I heard pre-Olympics was from Herc Gomez who said that you can’t realistically say that the US men are among the top 6 teams in the Olympics–they just aren’t. And so France (a very deep talented team playing at home) would take them to the woodshed. But that said, the US wouldn’t shock to make the knockout rounds. So today’s result is good (and fair and consistent with who the US are). I think we’ll struggle to get goals against good teams (ie: the absence of a Balo or Pepi). But we’ll play even for 85 minutes against most of the teams in this competition (sort of like what happened with France). And the better teams will have the talent and experience to find a way to score 1-3 times and we’ll hit the post or force a great save. No shame in that.

Against the teams who aren’t in the top 6, we are as good or better than them. And today the US men/boys showed that.

Perhaps just my impression, but this looked like a very well-coached team in both games so far (even the one they lost).

I would not have said that about the USMNT eve before Berhalter got fired.
