USA vs. Zambia: 2024 Olympics women’s group stage match thread
By popular demand (i.e. I think one or two of you requested we do this for US men’s and women’s games), here’s a place to talk about today’s match. Why didn’t we do it for the men yesterday? I forgot! We’ll try this out throughout the Olympics, though.
The match: USA vs. Zambia
Time: 3 p.m. ET
Where to watch: USA Network, Universo, Peacock, NBCSports.com, Fubo

Important match info: Goff is reporting Jaedyn Shaw is injured for this match, and Croix Bethune will appear on the gameday roster in her place.

Oh, wow, didn’t know. And thanks so much for the space! Just found it!
Thank you, thank you. I was one who requested such a thread.
And “you go, Croix!”

Some good attempts by the US so far, but I’m pretty nervous about what Zambia and Barba Banda can do.
Yesssss, after several attempts by the US, Rodman gets a goal! Her first for USWNT in a while.
Yeah we were hitting the frame and having it cleared off the line by desperate Zambian defending.
Richly deserved and well executed, couldn’t be happier for Trin
There’s a 2nd!
And a 3rd off the kickoff the rout has begun.
And Zambia is reduced to 10 after a yellow is upgraded to a red following VAR.
I feel bad for that Zambian player. Harsh, but it probably was DOGSO
Letter of the law, correct, but arguably against the spirit of the game
I am biased and I felt that was a tough 50-50 yellow-red call. I feel for the Zambian Olympian.
Dang, that’s a marginal handball by Davidson in the box that VAR wasn’t interested in. Yes, the arm is at her side, but it did increase her frame…
Man, it would suck to lose both Shaw and Smith to niggles this early in the tournament
Not that she’s technically more dangerous than Smith, I would hate to see Williams on as Zambia
Rodman misses a wide open header when she’s completely unmarked in the box on a set piece…
Frankly think Horan’s miss in the opening seconds was more heinous
Fair, both were bad though.
I get the feeling that, on a rougher surface, Zambia makes this more of a game. But in this possession and passing conducive pitch, the US women are absolutely rampant
We’ve been handling Zambia’s speed pretty well.
It’s not like our team lacks for athleticism. That said, Banda got pulled down by Davidson early, and that fact was probably the only reason Tierna’s not on a yellow
Horan gets a lot of fucking fouls, it’s a wonder she’s able to push through
It’s difficult even playing up a woman to ignore Banda at all, but I wonder if goal differential factors into this mentality at any point. If Zambia fall apart in terms of morale as the tournament goes on, they may be a goal concession chasm. The US may want a few more
Quarterfinal results in Men’s rugby heading into the USA v Australia game at 4:30. Fiji 19 Ireland 15, France 26 Argentina 14, South Africa 14 New Zealand 7. So if the US upset the favored Australians they will face Fiji a 2nd time if they lose they will face Ireland in the 5-8 placement matches.
Australia has to make an injury replacement halfway through first half (7 minute halves).
The Aussies strike first with a try. Australia making the US pay for penalties to move the ball up the field as well as some good line breaks. Conversion is no good its 5-0 to Australia.
US gets screwed by a split second 50-50 decision that allows Australia to score in extra time of 1st half. Conversion missed so its 10-0 to Australia with 1 half to play.
US is just spluttering and not getting anything done here in the quarterfinal match.
Come on, Emma, release the Croix-Ken!
She’s out of subs! Why were these choices made?!?
Australia just absolutely dominates the US and its 18-0 to Australia. Australia is through to the medal rounds for the first time.
First off, thanks a ton to Annie and the writers for creating the first ever US soccer game thread! We appreciate you all
Second, it seems likely to me that the US need to get nine for nine to top the group.
Hear, hear! I second this “thanks a ton.” A game thread for big games is a good thing. And I don’t mean to make extra work for the hard working DP staff but…
And you are probably true. I’m kind of surprised Australia went down so easily to Germany.
Ditto JoeW closing thanks.
