New MLS rules, Hamid to Sweden, and more: Wednesday Freedom Kicks

So suffice it to say, I don’t think winter temperatures are coming back, though I would have liked to have seen some more Spring temperatures before the high 70s or 80s come around. The forecast seems to to be in my favor on that front. May our windows be open and our HVAC systems be off for a while!

Off-Field Treatment Rule, Timed Substitution Rule, and In-Stadium VAR Announcements to take effect starting this Saturday, April 20 (MLS): Honey, wake up! New MLS rules just dropped! I’m very eager to see this in action (because I was very ineffective of seeing it occur in MLS Next Pro).

How are first-year MLS coaches doing so far? (MLS): Last week’s results notwithstanding, the feelings remain pretty good for Lesesne. I’m not giving him a hard time over the loss to Orlando; I told my Union friend before the match that D.C. was destined to pay the price for Rooney’s curse against Orlando over the years. I only hope this L, in embarrassing fashion, is enough to wash the teams clean of Rooney’s lingering essence and they can get back to competing without supernatural effects.

Power Rankings: Inter Miami, LA Galaxy climb after big road wins (MLS): Embarrassing L’s will still earn a drop in the weekly arbitrary rankings (as well as the real standings of course).

FIFA tackling unique problem at 2026 World Cup: Natural grass in 5 indoor stadiums (Fox Sports): I would much rather be complaining about stadium turf for this World Cup cycle than the stadium controversies of the last World Cup cycle.

2024 US Open Cup Round 3 preview: First wave of USL championship teams join the tournament (TheCup.us): The US Open Cup continues to chug along around us. Today sees The Richmond Kickers host Loudoun United tonight at 7:00 PM.

USL Championship Team of the Week – Week 6 (USL): Speaking of Loudoun United, both Awuah and Valot made the Team of the Week for their roles in defeating Memphis 2-1.

NWSL Weekend Take-Off: Chawinga taking over, Thorns still adrift (Pro Soccer Wire): A pity the NWSL Team-of-the-Week can’t make room for “Own Goal”.

BK Häcken värvar från USA (BK Häcken): It’s time to introduce Sweden to some new chants. May they soon be singing “Jasmine Hamid. Jas-mine Hamid” throughout the nation!

Mbappé seals PSG comeback to eliminate 10-man Barcelona (ESPN): That’s one way to overcome an aggregate going into the away-match! PSG join Dortmund in assuring La Liga won’t dominate the representation in the Semi-finals. At 3:00 PM today, we’ll see if the league receives any representation as they fly to Manchester to face City (3-3 aggregate). Elsewhere, Arsenal will be in Munich (2-2 aggregate) to try and salvage some sense of pride after they saw their Premier League hopes take a hit last weekend.

Lastly, may the following gif from Reddit’s latest Meme Monday be the cherry on top of a thicker Freedom Kicks that hopefully suffices as an apology for my absence a number of weeks.

Screw Garber and the owners I wish all of MLS was competing in the USOC.

Lesesne made it public and clear that DCU wanted to participate.

Again, showing his class.

It is embarrassing to me that we are not in USOC.
