DC United draw, USWNT win, and more: Solar Eclipse Monday Freedom Kicks
Happy Monday, everyone! I’m off in search of a solar eclipse…hopefully the clouds stay out of the way and allow us to enjoy this incredible phenomenon! Here’s what happened over the weekend in the world of soccer.
Columbus Crew 1-1 DC United: Highlights
D.C. United got a Christian Benteke goal and thought they had an edge when Cucho Hernandez saw red in the 2nd half. However, an Aidan Morris rocket helped the Crew equalize 1-1.
Three thoughts as USWNT presses its way to SheBelieves Cup win over Japan (Pro Soccer Wire)
It definitely started out horrific for the USWNT as Japan scored inside 40 seconds and Naomi Girma was subbed off earlier due to an injury. However, goals by Jaedyn Shaw and Lindsey Horan helped the USWNT over Japan in the SheBelieves Cup. They will take on Canada in the final on Tuesday.
D.C. United want a soccer stadium in Baltimore. Residents feel left in the dark. (Baltimore Banner)
Some more information on DC United’s plans to build a stadium in Baltimore, presumably for a MLS Next Pro team, and how the residents feel about some of the potential location options.
Patrick Mullins discusses playing days, work with Loudoun United (DP)
Ryan catches up with Patrick Mullins to discuss his return to the area to coach with Loudoun United!
Hey Spirits episode: Rodman record + Kingsbury saves = 3 points (DP)
A new Hey Spirits episode dropped over the weekend, so check out their thoughts on the Spirit’s win over Utah last weekend.
Fenerbahce walk off after one minute to forfeit Turkish Super Cup (ESPN)
A wild scene in Turkey as Fenerbache, fielding a U-19 team due to schedule congestion, forfeited the Turkish Super Cup after 1 minute. Soccer in Turkey is really having a rough time and may need a reset.
Flamengo withdraws from MLS youth cup amid abuse investigation (ESPN)
The MLS Next Generation Adidas Cup competition has been marred by racial abuse allegations. The latest episode comes from Flamengo, who withdrew from the competition after an investigation was launched into accusations of discriminatory language between them and the Philadelphia Union academy.
Athletic Club beat Mallorca in Copa del Rey final to end 40-year trophy drought (The Guardian)
Athletic Bilbao wins the Copa del Rey over Mallorca to win the trophy for the first time in 40 years. The interesting thing is that Bilbao wins this trophy every 40 years: 1904, 1944, 1984, and now 2024.
If you look up today, make sure you have some eclipse glasses. Enjoy the view!

I’ve got the eclipse glasses, now hoping the clouds part around 3pm-ish.
Interesting article on the MLS website by Doyle. He basically says that the Columbus match is just one more piece of data that “DC United is legit” this year and said (this is a little bit of hyperbole on his part) that for the 4 road draws we’ve been the better team in every game. Not quite true but I’ll take it.
He also says that things are troubling with Cucho Hernandez–that a 2 game suspension for how he left when subbed 3 matches ago isn’t a fit–there must be something else going on and now this red card for lashing out. I wonder if Cucho has decided it’s time to move on and he’s forcing the Crew’s hand?
The unintelligible scouser (also known as Wayne Rooney) completes the MLS trifecta as a general manager?
OGDC with their 2nd draw at home of the season with LA (the relocated Atlanta team). And the score line is the same as the first draw at 22-22. DC should’ve won the game with all the time they spent with man advantage, but great defense and short handed offense by LA.

Old Glory has a bye this weekend.
The US Men’s and Women’s 7s NTs returned to action this past weekend with the Hong Kong event for the HSBC 7s series. Both teams continue to compete and prepare for the Olympics in Paris this summer. The Women’s team finished 2nd with their first appearance in a final this season. Whilst the Men finished 7th and are fighting to avoid relegation playoff to the Challenger Series for the 2024-2025 season.

In the most recent Inside DC video, Claudia sits down with Antley for a decently long discussion. I think its safe to say his performance has been a pleasant surprise so far this season, but this interview with him was really good. I didn’t realize that he may actually the first player ever to play in the top 4 tiers of the US Soccer ladder. Great interview all around
Agreed. Very Lesesne-like arc to his career.
I love this series Claudia is doing its pretty cool.
Good series. And Antley is a really good pickup. No worse than competent, fits the system reasonably well, very versatile.
Plus he’s a better defender than Santos.
