Freedom Kicks

Spirit acquire Leicy Santos, US Open Cup and CCC continue, and more: Wednesday Freedom Kicks

Boy, Easter sure was gorgeous. I didn’t realize it would be the last time we’d see the sun for a week. May these kicks be a thin ray of light piercing the dark clouds of your Wednesday.

Washington Spirit Lands Colombian National Team Star, World Cup Standout Leicy Santos (Washington Spirit): The Spirit inked a big signing here, acquiring Santos from Atlético Madrid. Santos will fly out to D.C. after the Liga F series ends.

Power Rankings: LA Galaxy gain momentum, LAFC stumble before El Tráfico (MLS): D.C. United steadily moving up these arbitrary rankings. In the real rankings, the Black and Red are hanging tight with the leaders as they sit 3 points out of 1st place.

If Inter Miami wants to be superpower, beating Monterrey is a start (Pro Soccer Wire): The CONCACAF Champions Cup is back in action this week with three MLS teams in the quarter finals. Those on Messi watch remain uncertain as to the player’s availability. One thing’s for sure though: the internet can still produce some S-tier memes:

Also continuing this week is the US Open Cup (it does still exist). At the time of writing this, I still don’t know the outcome of DMV-local Maryland Bobcats vs estranged D.C. United ex-partner, Richmond Kickers. Let me know if my local Germantown soccer team is moving on!

Things this writer definitely didn’t forget: San Diego will be joining Major League Soccer next year. As such, they continue their efforts toward… well… existing. They look to have their director picked out:

Steven Goff over on not-yet-supported-to-be-embedded Threads noted that the Manchester City-Arsenal matchup was the “most-watched Premier League match in U.S. history, with 2.12 million viewers across NBC, Peacock and NBC Sports Digital platforms and first English-language match to surpass 2 million viewers.” This Premier League race continues to impress.

Here are renderings of the soccer stadium the Revolution want to build in Everett (Boston.com): If you’re like me, you’re a sucker for stadium renderings (and possibly pointing out what’s unrealistic about them). The Revs still aim to move closer to Boston, and these renderings help reveal how that might look.

Something difficult to comprehend is just how much soccer players run on the pitch. D.C. United puts into perspective just how much Mateusz Klich has run so far this season:

Lastly, I leave you with some completely random tifo from Sweden. I love maps too much that I felt compared to share it:

I leave the rest of the grey day kicks to you, dear readers! Get kicking in the comments below!

Klich is “The Man”! And that is all I have to say about that.

Pretty obvious why Leeds supporters were sad to see him go. I hope we can hang on to him another year.

We just need him to stop getting dumb yellows so he doesn’t miss matches.

Looks like San Diego has also hired former United employee Sean Howe as well.

One very small tidbit, but Ricardo Pepi’s agent has reportedly told PSV that his player’s marginal sub status is not sustainable for the client, and I can’t blame him.

I’m sure PSV can make some money of him since he’s shown he can score when given minutes. Only problem is he’ll have to start from the bottom again wherever he ends up next.

It seems that this is more an initial rattling the cage by the agent to see what the response from PSV is. The thing to bear in mind is that De Jong, their current starter, is winding down, regardless of his success in the league this year. Pepi IMO is a much more dynamic player, but De Jong has very good hold up play and has allowed others to shine. De Jong is also a bit of a legend in the league, which, take that as you will for the level of most teams and the frequency of stay for top performers and talents.

It’s tricky, but I think the agent is making clear that patience is wearing thin in the Pepi camp, and PSV just has a decision to make .

Peltola got a shout-out on the League website as one of the top “under the radar” signings of the off-season. Definitely been a very important addition, moreso with Canouse out indefinitely.
